Application Analysis of a Novel Reduction Method for Spurious Oscillations in 2D Impact Problems

The numerical solution of impact problems are oftentimes problematic due to the presence of spurious oscillations in the resulting functions. Eliminating these oscillations is complicated and requires a damping effect to be exerted in the solution. In the proposed method, viscous damping has been applied with a special damping character. Using this scheme, the numerical solution of 2D impact problems contains significantly less oscillations compared to other widely applied methods. In quantitative terms, an improvement of 2.42% and 9.29% or more can be achieved in the time evolution of the velocity and the pressure, respectively.

AGGLOMERATION TENDENCY ANALYSIS OF STAINLESS STEEL POWDERS FOR DMLS PRODUCTION USING SEM IMAGING

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology is gaining ground in the automotive industry, especially in areas where a high strength-to-weight ratio is of paramount importance, such as racing cars and limited production supercars. It has the advantage of being able to create complex, weight-reduced components. In this research, we present a scanning electron microscopy study of a powder feedstock of a given particle size. The state of the new feedstock and the effect of cyclic reuse are investigated and the changes are analysed. DMLS technology enables virtually waste-free production, as the powder can be reused after sieving, with the exception of the supports used for undercuts. The aim is to investigate whether the particles tend to agglomerate and thus form larger irregular clusters. It is well known in the literature that clusters adversely affect powder fluidity, spreadability and laser energy absorption, suggesting that the quality of the powder is a fundamental determinant of the properties of the final product. Clusters should be identified and investigated from both a scientific and a technological point of view. The investigated powder material is Oerlikon MetcoAdd 17-4PH-A, a martensitic stainless steel feedstock produced by gas atomization.

The event-driven social responsibility in small and medium-sized enterprises

Since the survival and growth of small firms depend largely on their ability to acquire legitimacy within the institutional environment, social responsibility plays an important role in their lives. The aim of this study was to investigate how a disruption in the normal course of business can lead to an evolution and change in the social responsibility activities of small and medium-sized enterprises. Such disruptions, called critical incidents, interrupt the normal functioning of the business. The case-based exploratory study found that such critical events can have a positive impact. In particular, they can initiate the integration of socially responsible business practices. This is a journey from philanthropic donations to fully integrated socially responsible practices, often driven by internal triggering events such as organisational growth, unanticipated changes in management, or generational change, which allow new values to be brought on board. When such an internal event is followed by a highly critical but external event, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the transformation gains momentum. The findings also suggest that social responsibility can be a new source of competitive advantage.

Blockchain Technology and the Circular Economy: A Systematic Literature Review

This paper aims to offer an overview of the features in the existing state of research on blockchains in the circular economy. A total of 79 articles published up to 31 May 2022 have been extracted from Scopus and Web of Science. The research design has enabled us to identify what characterises the present state of research on the use of blockchains in the circular economy. It has also allowed us to obtain a new categorisation scheme of the research that has identified five themes and the contributions in each theme and has allowed us to highlight several research gaps. The review findings indicate that the literature revolved around five research themes, namely, the relationship between blockchains and Industry 4.0, the potential of blockchains for circular economy practices, the role of blockchains in energy management, the role of blockchains in waste management and the impact of blockchains on sustainability. This review suggests several future research opportunities and provides practical implications for researchers and practitioners. To the authors' best knowledge, this study represents one of the first attempts to investigate the interplay between blockchain technology and the circular economy.

Investigation of the Effect of a New Type of Copper–Sucrose Complex Compound on the Yield and Quality Parameters of Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

We conducted experiments on winter wheat grown in copper-deficient soil, where soil tests revealed a more pronounced deficiency in the deeper layers. As climate change reduces precipitation, plants increasingly rely on nutrients from these deeper layers. A copper–sucrose complex—previously unused in agriculture—was applied as a foliar spray during the tillering and flowering stages. Across the three-year average, significant increases were observed starting from the 1 kg ha−1 copper dose in yield, from 0.3 kg ha−1 in crude protein content, and from 0.5 kg ha−1 in wet gluten content compared to the untreated control. For all three parameters, the highest values were achieved with the 2 kg ha−1 dose. Yield increased by 1.03 t ha−1, crude protein by 0.9%, and wet gluten by 2.3% relative to the control. In 2019, high humidity and favorable temperatures during flowering led to fungal infections in control plots, with DON toxin concentrations exceeding the regulatory safety threshold. Following copper–sucrose complex application, DON levels dropped below this threshold, demonstrating a measurable protective effect.

Hard tick infestation of birds of prey (Aves: Accipitriformes, Strigiformes, Falconiformes) in the Western Palearctic: New data and literature review

Tick infestation of songbirds has been extensively studied at global and regional scales but relevant data on birds of prey remain scarce and fragmentary. Raptors are of particular epidemiological relevance because their large size, wide-ranging movements and nesting habits may facilitate long-distance dispersal of ticks, and endophilic tick species (e.g. from prey animals) may even persist in their re-used nests. In this study, we aimed to compensate for the lack of comprehensive data in this context. First, more than 1800 birds of prey were examined at 61 sites in Central and South-Eastern Europe, encompassing both continental and Mediterranean climatic regions. Ticks (n = 839) were obtained from 98 birds representing 13 raptor species from three avian orders. Twelve tick species were identified, the most abundant being Rhipicephalus turanicus, Haemaphysalis concinna and Ixodes ricinus. Several previously unknown tick–host associations were revealed. Molecular-phylogenetic analysis showed that sequences of Ixodes arboricola from Tawny Owls (Strix aluco) clustered separately from other conspecific sequences, raising the possibility that Ixodes strigicola Schulze and Schlottke, 1929 is a valid species. Owls proved to be the most heavily tick-infested, particularly Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo) nestlings. Endophilic and rodent-associated tick species were significantly more common on owls and on bird species nesting in cavities or buildings, whereas diurnal raptors were predominantly infested by generalist and exophilic ticks. These patterns highlight the importance of nesting ecology and prey composition in shaping tick assemblages on raptors. The results provide novel insights into tick–raptor associations, contribute new records of tick species from birds of prey, and improve our understanding of the role of raptors in tick maintenance and dispersal which appears to be particularly important in the case of cavity-nesting species. In addition to field sampling, a comprehensive database from nearly 150 published sources revealed that 32 tick species have been reported from birds of prey in the Western Palearctic to date.

Implementing Nature-Based Solutions for Treatment of Winery's Wastewater and Sustainable Carbon-Footprint Reduction

Nature-based solutions can reduce the negative effects of climate change by mitigating the risk of droughts with water retention, increasing infiltration, controlling stormwater runoff and by decreasing atmospheric greenhouse gas emission. The carbon footprint of wastewater treatment plants is significant; the processes are energy-intensive and thus high CO2 emitters. The technology of wine making creates wastewater with extremely high organic content and is coupled with high carbon footprint. Its treatment poses challenges for wastewater plants. This study focuses on the wastewater of winemaking process and its negative effects on carbon-footprint and the wastewater management opportunities of the Csengőd wastewater treatment plant in Hungary. The traditional wastewater treatment and the potential implementation of a poplar plantation were assessed economically and environmentally. The energy consumption and the carbon footprint reduction were compared in the two cases to evaluate their sustainability. Significant energy savings and economic benefits can be achieved by the trade-off between traditional treatment and the use of nature-based solutions. The assessment is novel, because it evaluates all three sustainability pillars, considering: benefits with pay-off through technological processes, environmental aspects and additionally the interests of stakeholders. A poplar plantation can be used to pre-treat wastewater of a winery and thus effectively reduce the high organic concentration – thereby protecting the sensitive technologies of traditional wastewater plants. The trade-off results in annual energy savings of 61,823 kWh and CO2 emission reduction of 16,692 kg, which means financial savings. The direct sustainable benefits are € 287,824 over the 50-year life cycle in a small wastewater plant.

Analysis of Success Factors in Construction Projects under Consideration of Sustainability: A Literature and Legal Approach

Success of construction projects will be affected by changing law and policy. In construction, where much money is at stake, risks must be calculated very carefully to finish the construction project with success. Nowadays, social impact of buildings, engineering ethics, and, in particular, environmental sustainability become increasingly important topics in construction, driven by current law and policy, especially in the European Union. The aim of the recently started research project is to find out if and how risks resulting from current changes in law and policy, with focus on sustainability, will be considered in construction project management. In the first step, the authors reviewed legal regulations as well as political considerations, and analyzed relevant research literature. The results are summarized in this paper. They can be a basis for a deeper risk analysis and the elaboration of solutions for how to deal with these challenges in construction contract design and project management. During their research, the authors studied relevant current European and German law and policy as well as scientific articles from the databases Web of Sciences and Scopus. The conclusion from the detailed literature analysis is that there is a need for more and deeper research to identify risks for sustainable construction projects resulting from law and policy and for developing strategies to manage them.

Travel Demand Increment Due to the Use of Autonomous Vehicles

Advanced technology available in promising fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) will encourage people to travel more than they have up to now using their regular vehicles. It is believed that the disadvantages of manually driven vehicles, such as driving fatigue, stressful feelings, aging physical skills deterioration, and other unwanted effects, will vanish once AVs are employed. For this purpose, this study presents the results of a large questionnaire performed in Győr, Hungary, about the public perception and acceptance of AVs. In addition, assessing the impact of using such technology on increasing travel demand when people can alter their mode of transport to an AV. The study demonstrates that respondents’ prior knowledge of AVs plays a crucial role in generating a greater number of trips when they are able to use AVs. Furthermore, it has also been found that providing further awareness and education to the population about the meaning of the term autonomous vehicles and widening their insights about the new features provided by these vehicles will result in a higher number of trips. Eventually, this information will act as a considerable indicator to provide a prior understanding of the possible challenges that may impact the sustainability of future transport systems.
