In this paper we present a short-term robot edutainment for junior high school students. The theme of this robotic course is the walking motion of multi-legged robot. We provided the students with the robot educational material that contains assembled leg parts. The students devised the configuration and motion of the robot using given constraints. We conducted a robot contest for the students to present their results in this robot course. As a result, by using limited materials, the students were able to produce a robot that shows their ingenuity. We could observe from a questionnaire about the course that the students were interested in science and robots. © 2013 IEEE.

Hierarchical spiral discovery networks for multi-layered exploration-exploitation tradeoffs

The Spiral Discovery Network (SDN) was recently proposed as a tool for automated parametric optimization based on the Spiral Discovery Method. SDN can be seen as a heuristic optimization approach that offers tradeoffs between exploration and exploitation without hav- ing recourse to explicit gradient-based feedback information (unlike classical neural networks) and without requiring hand-coded representations of metaheuristic constructs such as genotypes (unlike genetic algorithms). In this paper, the properties of the SDN model are further explored, and two extensions to the model are proposed. The first extension corrects a shortcoming of the original model and has to do with the assignment of credit among different output components based on the most recent performance of the model at any given time. The second extension con- sists of using multiple SDN cells in a hierarchical architecture, which enables a fuller and more effective exploration of the parametric space. The improvements provided by the two extensions are validated on the same set of simulations discussed in earlier work.

Performance Analysis of Encryption Capabilities of ARM-based Single Board Microcomputers

In the few years since the Raspberry Pi was released in 2012, countless microcomputers based on the ARM architecture have been introduced. Their small size, high performance relative to their power consumption, and the ability to run the popular Linux operating system make them ideal for a wide range of tasks. Information security is an area of particular importance. Different encryption and encoding algorithms play an important role in almost all areas of information security. However, these algorithms are very computationally intensive, so it is important to investigate which microcomputers can be used for these tasks, and under which trade-offs. The performance of ten different microcomputers is investigated and presented for the application of common symmetric and public-key encryption and decryption, digest creation and message authentication protocols, such as RSA, AES, HMAC, MD5, SHA. Reliable encryption requires the generation of reliable (pseudo)random numbers (Cryptographically Secure Random Numbers, CSRN), and microcomputers based on ARM SoCs usually have hardware implemented (pseudo)random number generators. The applicability of the random number generators of different microcomputers are investigated and presented; test methods are described, and recommendations are made.

Tribological investigation of the effect of nanosized CuO and TiO2 on a base oil containing Komad 323 dispersant

This article investigates the impact of copper(II) oxide (CuO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in Group III base oil with 8 wt% Komad 323 dispersant. Nanoparticles underwent ethyl oleate surface modification. Tribological properties were assessed using a linear oscillating tribometer, continuously monitoring static friction. Friction integral values were derived from extensive data acquisition. Wear analysis employed digital optical and confocal microscopy, complemented by scanning electron microscopy for wear-type characterization and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy for additive quantification in the wear track. Results indicate CuO nanoparticles' poor compatibility with Komad 323, resulting in increased friction (2-13%) and substantial wear reduction (39-50%) at low CuO concentrations (≤0.3 wt%). Higher concentrations (≥0.4 wt%) reduced friction (21-35%) but led to surface fatigue and increased wear rates. Elemental composition analysis of the wear track revealed that the surface contains 1.43-3.17 norm.wt% copper. Conversely, TiO2 in synergy with the dispersant, formed a boundary layer, exhibiting lower friction by 11-14%. TiO2 formed a high wear resistance boundary layer at titanium concentrations of 0.33-0.39 norm.wt%, which resulted in 44% wear volume reduction. Applying both nanoparticles reduced the wear scar diameter of the test specimens by 3-12%.

Sensitivity Analysis of SAC 305 Solder Polycrystal Mechanical Parameters and Predicted Fatigue Lifetime with Different Grain Structures

The microstructural behaviours of solder joints during thermomechanical stresses are still not fully understood, and the thermomechanical reliability of solder joints remains a research area for scientists. In many cases, the solder material is modelled as a homogeneous material in Finite Element-based lifetime estimation calculations, while the microstructural effects are neglected. The development of virtual lifetime estimation methods is required; these methods should involve grain structure and therefore provide accurate results for a variety of test cases under thermomechanical loading. This paper presents a meso-scale analysis of lead-free SAC305 solder polycrystals using DAMASK modelling of the grain structure of the solder material and emulating mechanical loading while investigating the mechanical response of the polycrystal. Our finding is that the orientations and grain sizes of the solder polycrystal have significant effects on the mechanical parameters, and these microstructural parameters could not be neglected, because the impact of these also has a very relevant impact on the estimated lifetimes.

In the 21st century tacit knowledge and its management has become a central theme of organizations and enterprises. Until the last decade, the possession of physical resources meant wealth and power in business. Labour, capital and natural resources were the key factors of production. Today, this trend is undeniably changing. In the rapidly evolving world of technology the only important factor providing long-term competitive advantage is the knowledge of the employees. Tacit knowledge is an invisible resource which has an enormous effect on the performance and success of a company, though it is personal, context-and cultures-pecific, besides hard to formalize and communicate. Tacit knowledgeincludes experiences, ideas, values and emotions and of course the factors of national culture. The main problem is that institutions are not aware of what kind of knowledge and information they possess. Hence, these assets are unorganized and not focused towards any objectives. The difficulties of sharing the lessons and experiences lead to wasting time and money on solving problems that have already been solved. That is why it is necessary to engage in knowledge management. As part of a wide-range research, we have examined which methods and procedures are used by Hungarian and Slovak companies to facilitate the retention of tacit knowledge of their employees in the organizational memory. How can the national culture influence the use of tacit knowledge management methods? The study involved 124 Hungarian and 122 Slovak companies and raised important questions in the scientific and organizationallife as the focus of our research. In our research we aspired to involve a wide range of enterprises, subsequently we examined small-and medium-size enterprises, multinational companies and organizations from both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. We conducted both qualitative and quantitative research because this is the most effective way of understanding the problem mentioned above.

The fact that knowledge management plays an important role in the life of businesses can be proved by the number ofthe scientific publications dealing with this issue. It can be said to be a current favourite and well-processed topic of literature. In practice among middle- and senior managers it has become a means of strategy creation as its methods are more often used at an operative level. Our decision to begin our research in this field was strengthened by the further consideration of a quotation by Edwin Land - the leader of HP - often cited in the literature on this topic. According to Land "90 percent of Polaroid's capital get in their car and go home every evening". This is indeed true but according to Land the following morning they also get back in their car and 90% of the company's capital will again be in the same place and available once more. Since a part of knowledge belongs to the individual, meaning that it cannot be documented or verbalised as it is based on experience, the question arises as to what types of new tasks the holding of this knowledge creates, especially in the case of those in key positions and employees considered as key figures from another viewpoint. This question becomes particularly exciting - where we are also able to see the real value/benefit of this study- if, through analysing the most common form of predictable labour movements (here I refer mainly to retirement), sucha procedure can be reconstructed, thus providing businesses with the means to prepare themselves for a continuous shar of tacit or experimental knowledge in the case of other predictable labour movement (like maternity leave or a longer period in the foreign domiciles of a subsidiary or a parent company). A major part of preserving competitive advantage nowadays is knowledge, especially tacit knowledge. For this reason we will highlight that due to these dynamic processes tacit knowledge sharing of businesses should be continuous in corporate practice in the case of every "important" person. This direction would differ from the approaches of knowledge management dealing with implicit knowledge in that we would not look for the solution to transforming implicit knowledge to explicit knowledge but rather in such a system-based process, the result of which would be a conscious management of tacit knowledge sharing. The main line of knowledge management science is how to transform implicit knowledge to explicit in order to share it. I would like to introduce a new wayof knowledge sharing which doesn't rely on traditional tools.

DNA extraction and STR profiling from histological slides

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks are commonly used in the field of pathology and forensic pathology as a source of histological slides. For postmortem kinship analysis or identification, DNA can be extracted from blocks with specialized kits. However, when an STR profile should be generated from single microscope slides, the removal of the coverslip and the limited sample size poses unique challenges. We aimed to test the effectivity of agitated xylene incubation to dissolve the mounting material to facilitate the coverslip removal. DNA extraction tests were performed on 5- to 7-year-old histological slides. Xylol was used to dissolve the mounting medium to facilitate cover slide removal, one set of samples was shaken during incubation, and the other set was left still. It was found that shaking the sample while bathed in xylol decreased the incubation time from three days to two days. Agitation not just reduced the processing time but increased the quality of acquired STR profiles: on average 30% more alleles were detected from the shaken samples compared to the still bathed ones.

Transfer Learning-Based Steering Angle Prediction and Control with Fuzzy Signatures-Enhanced Fuzzy Systems for Autonomous Vehicles

This research introduces an innovative approach for End-to-End steering angle prediction and its control in electric power steering (EPS) systems. The methodology integrates transfer learning-based computer vision techniques for prediction and control with fuzzy signatures-enhanced fuzzy systems. Fuzzy signatures are unique multidimensional data structures that represent data symbolically. This enhancement enables the fuzzy systems to effectively manage the inherent imprecision and uncertainty in various driving scenarios. The ultimate goal of this work is to assess the efficiency and performance of this combined approach by highlighting the pivotal role of steering angle prediction and control in the field of autonomous driving systems. Specifically, within EPS systems, the control of the motor directly influences the vehicle’s path and maneuverability. A significant breakthrough of this study is the successful application of transfer learning-based computer vision techniques to extract respective visual data without the need for large datasets. This represents an advancement in reducing the extensive data collection and computational load typically required. The findings of this research reveal the potential of this approach within EPS systems, with an MSE score of 0.0386 against 0.0476, by outperforming the existing NVIDIA model. This result provides a 22.63% better Mean Squared Error (MSE) score than NVIDIA’s model. The proposed model also showed better performance compared with all other three references found in the literature. Furthermore, we identify potential areas for refinement, such as decreasing model loss and simplifying the complex decision model of fuzzy systems, which can represent the symmetry and asymmetry of human decision-making systems. This study, therefore, contributes significantly to the ongoing evolution of autonomous driving systems.
