Biorefining green triticale grass as a flavonoid-rich source of protein for sustainable food systems

Green biomass serves as an eco-friendly, plant-derived substitute for conventional protein sources. Leaf protein concentrate (LPC) not only acts as a viable alternative to animal-derived proteins but also contains essential vitamins and bioactive compounds providing nutraceutical advantages. The extraction technique plays a critical role in maximizing LPC yield. In this study, green juice derived from the wet pressing of green triticale biomass was divided into two aliquots, each subjected to distinct processing techniques for LPC isolation. One portion underwent direct thermal coagulation via microwave irradiation, followed by vacuum filtration, yielding green LPC (MW-GLPC) and its brown juice (GJ-BJ). The other was first centrifuged to remove large photosynthetic complexes, producing yellow juice that was subsequently thermally coagulated and vacuum filtered to obtain yellow LPC (YLPC) and its brown juice (YJ-BJ).The crude protein content in the MW-GLPC fraction (38.44 g 100 g−1 DW) was higher than the raw green juice (16.38 g 100 g−1 DW). YLPC fraction, obtained by incorporating a centrifugation step into the process, resulted in a significantly increase in crude protein (67.22 g 100 g−1 DW). For fractions of brown juice (BJ), the crude protein content differed depending on the processing technique, with GJ-BJ exhibiting 0.73 g 100 g−1 FW and YJ-BJ displaying 1.06 g 100 g−1 FW. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) indicated that BJ primarily contained oligopeptides ranging from 200 to 3000 Da.Phytochemical assessments demonstrated that YLPC exhibits the highest concentration of some beneficial bioactive compounds, such as luteolin (27.2 μg g−1), and isovitexin (111.6 μg g−1). These findings are consistent with results obtained from the Drosophila melanogaster model under high-sugar conditions designed to simulate high-sugar-induced stress. Flies supplemented with a concentration of 20% YLPC demonstrated a 10.52% increase in viability relative to the control group, thereby indicating the beneficial potential of YLPC in high-sugar containing environments.

Various environmental perception methods have been proposed to address these challenges; however, these methods often lack general applicability. Many of these methods rely on environmental feature extraction, which can fail in specific scenarios, such as monochromatic environments. This article aims to evaluate existing SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) methods that utilize camera or combined camera and LiDAR input data in predominantly monochromatic environments. Additionally, this study seeks to identify performance issues in such applications.

Analysis of Transient-Like Vertical acceleration Events on Semi-Trailer Truck to Simulate Package Testing

In road traffic, encountering significant bumps is common, especially at sunken railway crossings, tertiary roads, and poorly maintained access roads. Speed bumps, also known as "sleeping policemen," exacerbate the issue, requiring drivers to slow down abruptly. Depending on visibility and anticipation, vehicles approach these obstacles at various speeds, resulting in impact loads primarily in the vertical direction on the vehicle's load platform. Accelerations exceeding g-force levels can cause cargo to bounce, leading to potential damage and horizontal sliding, particularly problematic for semi-trailer trucks carrying high-value goods. This study focused on measuring and evaluating this effect using a specific speed bump model simulating a defined road defect on a particular vehicle. The highest vertical acceleration recorded was 2.4G at a speed of 10 km/h. At 5 km/h, the acceleration was 0.76G, while at 15 km/h, it reached 1.9G. These findings suggest that a speed around 10 km/h poses the most risk for such vehicles, with acceleration levels expected to decrease for both slower and faster speeds.

Experimental and numerical investigations of external reinforced damaged pipelines

The lifetime management of different engineering structures and structural elements is one of the important technical-economic problems nowadays. The purpose of the paper is to present the role of the external reinforcing on the structural integrity of industrial and transporting steel pipelines, based on experimental and numerical investigations. External reinforcement was developed using carbon fibre polymer matrix composite (PMC). Fatigue and burst tests were performed on pipeline sections containing natural and artificial metal loss defects, and girth welds including weld defects (passed and not passed quality). Both unreinforced and reinforced pipeline sections were examined. For the FEM investigation of the problem three groups of mechanical models are applied: multilayered elastic shell, 3D elastic solid and 3D elastic-plastic solid FEM models. The aim of this numerical analysis is to clarify the deformation, stresses and strains in the surrounding area of defects both in the steel pipe and in the composite reinforcement. A further task is to determine numerically the width of the reinforcement and the number of layers needed for reinforcement or repair. The applicability of the hybrid structure (steel + PMC) was demonstrated by means of the experimental and the numerical results. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

RFID-Enhanced Modified Two-Bin System for Reducing Excess Inventory of FMCG Industry

Background: Globally, in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry, excess inventory results from the bullwhip effect. Earlier, barcode-based two-bin systems were limited by manual scanning; hence, a more responsive system is needed to align the inventory with real-time demand. Prior studies have predominantly concentrated on mitigating demand fluctuations and employed comparatively low-efficiency systems, hindering excess inventory (EI) reduction. Methods: This study proposes identifying research gaps, considering the distributor-manufacturer relationship, and developing an RFID-based modified two-bin system and mathematical model to reduce EI and control over manufacturers’ excessive cost. Results: This study tested through Python-based simulation using historical data from an FMCG manufacturer, and the proposed model achieved a reduction in 67% EI and 73% month-wise holding costs. Moreover, the integration of the Artificial Bee Colony algorithm optimizes rework rates within budget, including reworking shop-floor and holding costs, contributing to a monthly excessive cost reduction of 34–48%, alongside a corresponding 41–44% cumulative excessive cost reduction. Conclusions: Bringing significant implications on digitalized SCM, this study offers a practical and scalable solution for perishable FMCG items facing demand variability and budget constraints. Collectively, this novel perspective bridges research gaps and motivates future research for embedding trend-aligned parameters, enhancing the model’s performance through diverse SCM contexts like safety stock and backorder cost optimization.

Mitigation of inductive coupling effects on buried pipelines using gradient control conductors of overhead line configuration and hippopotamus optimization algorithm

By electromagnetic perturbation effect, the extra-high voltage (EHV) overhead transmission lines can cause significant induced voltages and currents on buried metallic pipelines located in the immediate vicinity. These voltages can present a source of hazard both for the structural I ntegrity of the metallic pipeline and for the safety of personnel responsible for operation and maintenance. This paper proposes the quasi-static modeling of the electromagnetic interference to which a buried metallic pipeline will be subjected nearby an extra-high voltage (EHV) overhead transmission line, under steady-state operating conditions of the power electrical grid. Using the electrical network analysis method to evaluate the induced voltage levels and its effects on the buried pipeline; also, to propose a mitigation strategy if necessary. The results obtained show that the values of the AC induced voltage on the buried pipeline are significant and exceed the limits defined by the international NACE standard. They can cause a risk of electrocution for intervention personnel and accelerate the process of metal corrosion. Therefore, the gradient control mitigation technique of the conductors and their optimal geometric arrangement of EHV transmission line using Hippopotamus Optimization (HO) algorithm were proposed to reduce AC induced voltages within the permissible safety limits, according to the requirements of the NACE Standard. Finally, it should be noted that the implementation of these mitigation approaches have led to remarkable results in eliminating potential risks.
