Effects of outdoor education on traveling habits of adults in Slovakia and Hungary

The purpose of the research is to present results of an international study are presented regarding the traveling habits of adults who participated in outdoor education programs during their childhood. Materials and methods: in the survey, 2965 Slovak and 2404 Hungarian adults were studied to determine if there is any correlation between school experience and travel behavior. In both countries, there are serious discussions as to why school education should offer and support school camps, which teach children sport skills while they are away from home. The data were processed using the Statistica program. Results: In both countries, one out of every five individuals (21.6% SK; 22.2% HU) participating in the study take a vacation in the summer months. As children, many (84.5% SK, 92% HU) of the participants took part in school water sport camps. Of these participants, 65.8% of the Slovaks and 60.2% of the Hungarians rated the time spent there as very positive. Among the positive values, 44.2% indicated that the mountains were a favourite and frequently a chosen travel destination. Twenty-five percent of the respondents spend more than four hours hiking during their vacation. Conclusions: Based on the results of our survey we can conclude that the camps in the mountains can be considered as a useful outdoor program (5-7 days), where the students can experience traveling, living together and having fun.

Predatory Medical Journals in Patent Literature: A Hidden Threat

Purpose: The negative impact of potential predatory journals has been widely discussed, primarily within academic contexts. However, their influence beyond academia remains underexplored. This study aims to address that gap. Methods: The current editorial utilised a sample list of 8 potential predatory medical journals. We compiled a list of potential predatory medical journals using the discontinued titles list in Scopus and the current blocklists. Then their patent-to-paper citations have been examined to understand the dissemination of questionable medical publications outside of academia. Results: This indicates that potential predatory medical journals received 483,848 citations from scholarly works and 4,251 citations from patents. Conclusion: When patents cite papers from predatory journals, flawed information may propagate, or potentially leading to wrongful patent rejections and wasted resources. This serves as a warning for the patent community to take action against potential predatory journals.

MEK1/2 Inhibitor (U0126) and PI3K Inhibitor (LY294002) Suppress Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Replication by Targeting MAPK/ERK1/2 and PI3K/AKT Signaling Pathways: Implications for Oral Health and Translational Control of Orolabial HSV-1 Infection

Background: Current antivirals for orolabial Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) often provide incomplete suppression and limited reactivation control, sustaining recurrent oral lesions and inflammation that compromise oral health. HSV-1 subverts host signaling networks to enhance its replication and trigger inflammation. Among these, the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) pathways are hijacked to facilitate viral gene expression and cell survival. Objectives: In this study, we employed U0126 [a mitogen-activated protein kinase 1/2 (MEK1/2) inhibitor] and LY294002 [a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor] as targeted pharmacological tools to intercept HSV-1’s exploitation of host keratinocyte signaling. Methods: Human HaCaT keratinocytes were infected with HSV-1 and treated with U0126 or LY294002. Western blotting was used to assess phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and activation of protein kinase B (AKT). MTT assays were performed to evaluate cell viability. Real-time PCR was utilized to quantify viral transcripts (ICP0, ICP4, gB, and gC) and inflammatory cytokines [interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)]. Confocal microscopy was employed to visualize the intracellular distribution of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (p-ERK1/2), phosphorylated activation of protein kinase B (p-AKT), and HSV-1 glycoprotein D (gD). Viral titers were determined using plaque assays. Results: The HSV-1 infection induced a time-dependent increase in phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and AKT, with p-ERK1/2 peaking at 12 h and p-AKT increasing 2.5-fold by 24 h. Cell viability declined from 100% at baseline to 45% at 24-hours post-infection (hpi). Treatment with U0126 and LY294002 reduced p-ERK1/2 and p-AKT levels to 25% and 30% of infected controls, respectively, restoring viability to 82 - 86%. Both inhibitors markedly suppressed viral gene expression (ICP0, ICP4, gB, gC down by 60 - 80%) and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α reduced by > 50%). Plaque assays showed a strong decline in infectious titers — from 175 plaques per well in untreated infection to 60 and 45 plaques after U0126 and LY294002, respectively. Confocal imaging further revealed diminished nuclear accumulation of p-ERK1/2 and p-AKT, indicating disruption of post-entry signaling critical for viral replication. Conclusions: Targeting host signaling bottlenecks with U0126 and LY294002 offers a dual-pronged antiviral strategy against HSV-1 by dismantling the ERK/AKT axis critical for replication and inflammatory amplification. These findings position MEK1/2 and PI3K as promising therapeutic nodes for managing cutaneous HSV-1 infections. This host-directed dual-pathway inhibition may therefore help reduce recurrent orolabial HSV-1 lesions.

Economic affordability of food as a component of the economic security of Ukraine

Economic security can be considered as an economic aspect of the life of an individual or household that provides the opportunity to achieve financial stability and improve living standards. In this context, understanding the impact of economic affordability of food on the economic security of the country is of great importance. The authors propose to use the indicator of economic affordability of food for in-depth analysis of the economic security of the country. Indicators that determine the level of economic affordability of food products in Ukraine for 2000-2018 are calculated. The regression analysis made it possible to establish a close relationship between the indicators of food expenditures and the level of GDP per capita, between the level of income and expenditure of food of decile groups. Correlation coefficients between the consumption of six basic foodstuffs and the level of per capita income in Ukraine are determined. The obtained indicators, which determine the economic affordability of food, allow us to conclude that there is a lack of economic protection at the level of individual low-income households. Overcoming economic instability and minimizing the possible consequences of the low level of economic affordability of food should become one of the main tasks of Ukraine's economic security.

It seems that human thinking does not work properlywith the mathematical processing: human decisionmakers tend to reject options that represent extreme values in the set of parameters and are not able to handle many system parameters at the same time. Ion-Implanted Diamond Blade Diced Ridge Waveguides in Pr:YLF—Optical Characterization and Small-Signal Gain Measurement

Planar optical waveguides were fabricated in Pr:YLF crystals by ion implantation. In a further step, ridge waveguides were fabricated using precision diamond dicing. These enable strong light confinement and have propagation losses as low as 0.4 dB/cm. To study the influence of ion implantation on the spectroscopic properties, fluorescence and lifetime measurements were conducted in the ridge waveguides. Under blue pumping, small-signal optical gains of 6.5 dB/cm and 5 dB/cm were demonstrated at wavelengths of 607 nm and 639 nm, respectively. These results make ion-implanted ridge waveguides in Pr:YLF promising candidates for compact integrated lasers in the visible spectral region with high output powers in the watt range.

This paper focuses on auditory sensory substitution for providing visually impaired users with suitable information in both static scene recognition and dynamic obstacle avoidance. We introduce three different sonification models together with three temporal presentation schemes, i.e. ways of temporally organizing the sonic events in order to provide suitable information. Following an overview of the motivation and challenges behind each of the solutions, we describe their implementation and an evaluation of their relative strengths and weaknesses based on a set of experiments conducted in a virtual environment.

The information about a system's dynamics represented by measurement data sets are often confined to regions of restricted operations where the system is not sufficiently excited for model identification purposes. Experiments performed in closed-loop with safety constraints allow only for reduced order modeling. In the paper, a set of low order models are identified from real experimental data of the lateral dynamics of an electric passenger car. Low order models are advantageous for on-line computation in model-based control, though uncertainty due to neglected dynamics may deteriorate control performance and constraint satisfaction. The effect of uncertainty is analyzed by controller cross-validation where a controller designed based on one model is evaluated on other models playing the role of the true system. This method allows us to qualify not only model-controller pairs, but to determine the properties of input data and model uncertainty, which lead to more useful data sets, more robust and better performing controllers than the others.
