A hybrid discrete bacterial memetic algorithm with simulated annealing for optimization of the flow shop scheduling problem

This paper deals with the flow shop scheduling problem. To find the optimal solution is an NP-hard problem. The paper reviews some algorithms from the literature and applies a benchmark dataset to evaluate their efficiency. In this research work, the discrete bacterial memetic evolutionary algorithm (DBMEA) as a global searcher was investigated. The proposed algorithm improves the local search by applying the simulated annealing algorithm (SA). This paper presents the experimental results of solving the no-idle flow shop scheduling problem. To compare the proposed algorithm with other researchers’ work, a benchmark problem set was used. The calculated makespan times were compared against the best-known solutions in the literature. The proposed hybrid algorithm has provided better results than methods using genetic algorithm variants, thus it is a major improvement for the memetic algorithm family solving production scheduling problems.

István Bibó's Political Ten Commandments

This article explores the historical context surrounding István Bibó, widely regarded as the most important Hungarian political thinker of the 20th century, and his analysis of moral publicity. Bibó’s work, The Ten Commandments of the Freedom-Loving Man, became a key text for intellectuals fighting against the communist regime. This text consists of ten statements reflecting important moral principles, as outlined in The Political Ten Commandments of the Freedom-Loving. Bibó wrote this during the Horthy era as a foundational document for a public initiative involving writers and activists associated with the movement. István Bibó clearly valued the moral principles of political ethics. Despite being banned, his text quickly spread through word of mouth, creating a network of intellectuals who resisted the communist regime’s oppression. Notably, this one-page document has yet to be translated into English. In our study, we trace the origins of this significant anti-communist text, written by Bibó, one of Hungary’s most influential political thinkers of the 20th century. The document presents political and moral propositions that remain timeless and relevant.

Measurement and Analysis of Vibration Levels in Rail Transport in Central Europe

In the last decade, with a continued change in world economic conditions and global trade, transportation of goods has continued to increase. The opening of new and existing markets requires that products and packages move through various regions of the world using available logistical equipment and networks at a faster pace. It also requires that damage be kept at a minimum while providing maximum safety to individuals. This can be achieved by properly designing packages to transportation levels that occur in the supply chain. The purpose of this research is to both measure and analyse the vibration physical forces that occur during rail transport. Rail shipments are widely used across the world, and they are an integral part of the intermodal transfer of ISO containers from ships and trucks to rail. The aim of this paper is to provide vibration levels measured for rail shipments on a major railway line in Central Europe that has not been previously published. The vibration levels that were measured in this study were compared with American Society of Testing and Materials, United States Military Standards and United Kingdom Defense Standard standards and International Safe Transit Association procedures in the form of power spectral density spectrums. A composite power spectral density spectrum is provided which can be used to simulate the measured rail vibration levels in Central Europe. Identity and soccer in Corsica

For decades Corsica could be characterized as an underdeveloped, politically unstable region ridden with violence. The 'Corsican Question' is a complex phenomenon, created over time as a result of political conflict, social tension and economic maladies. Despite the establishment of administrative autonomy in 1991 and a slow transformation within the French state, coupled with new efforts for institutional reform in order to develop and strengthen Corsica's political autonomy, a successful resolution of conflict in Corsica still remains quite illusory. The most popular sport in the world could be a weapon in the hands of national or ethnic minorities against the majority nation living on the island and against the state ruled by that nation. The Corsican example points up the important connection between football, politics and the question of nations and nationalities across the world. The essay examines how soccer has been used by the Corsican minority as a field of social protest, a stage for demonstrating distinctive identity. Local football is a mirror which reflects the various unresolved questions of the difficult and complex Corsican situation - Corsican identity, relations between the island and the French state, and so on. While Corsican football and the two major Corsican clubs might not ever achieve fame or a strong position in Europe, football will remain one of the most important expressions of Corsican national identity. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Hard tick infestation of birds of prey (Aves: Accipitriformes, Strigiformes, Falconiformes) in the Western Palearctic: New data and literature review

Tick infestation of songbirds has been extensively studied at global and regional scales but relevant data on birds of prey remain scarce and fragmentary. Raptors are of particular epidemiological relevance because their large size, wide-ranging movements and nesting habits may facilitate long-distance dispersal of ticks, and endophilic tick species (e.g. from prey animals) may even persist in their re-used nests. In this study, we aimed to compensate for the lack of comprehensive data in this context. First, more than 1800 birds of prey were examined at 61 sites in Central and South-Eastern Europe, encompassing both continental and Mediterranean climatic regions. Ticks (n = 839) were obtained from 98 birds representing 13 raptor species from three avian orders. Twelve tick species were identified, the most abundant being Rhipicephalus turanicus, Haemaphysalis concinna and Ixodes ricinus. Several previously unknown tick–host associations were revealed. Molecular-phylogenetic analysis showed that sequences of Ixodes arboricola from Tawny Owls (Strix aluco) clustered separately from other conspecific sequences, raising the possibility that Ixodes strigicola Schulze and Schlottke, 1929 is a valid species. Owls proved to be the most heavily tick-infested, particularly Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo) nestlings. Endophilic and rodent-associated tick species were significantly more common on owls and on bird species nesting in cavities or buildings, whereas diurnal raptors were predominantly infested by generalist and exophilic ticks. These patterns highlight the importance of nesting ecology and prey composition in shaping tick assemblages on raptors. The results provide novel insights into tick–raptor associations, contribute new records of tick species from birds of prey, and improve our understanding of the role of raptors in tick maintenance and dispersal which appears to be particularly important in the case of cavity-nesting species. In addition to field sampling, a comprehensive database from nearly 150 published sources revealed that 32 tick species have been reported from birds of prey in the Western Palearctic to date.

An improved index of interactivity for fuzzy numbers

In this paper we will introduce a new index of interactivity between marginal possibility distributions A and B of a joint possibility distribution C. The starting point of our approach is to equip each γ-level set of C with a uniform probability distribution, then the probabilistic correlation coefficient between its marginal probability distributions is interpreted as an index of interactivity between the γ-level sets of A and B. Then we define the index of interactivity between A and B as the weighted average of these indexes over the set of all membership grades. Sustainable Land Production Methods: The Spatiotemporal Evolution, Determinants, and Future Implications of Grain Crop Production Agglomeration in China Under Resource Constraints

Amid the backdrop of increasing global extreme weather events and tightening resource constraints on grain crop production. China, as the world's most populous country, faces persistent challenges to grain security. On one hand, grain crop production agglomeration (GCPA) can effectively address grain security challenges by optimizing the spatial layout of agricultural production. On the other hand, it can enhance the efficiency of resource utilization in grain production, thereby ensuring the stability and sustainability of the national grain supply. The study uses 1980 as the baseline and employs a range of analytical methods, including the spatial Gini coefficient, industrial concentration, global Moran's I, and LISA agglomeration map, to investigate the temporal–spatial variation trends and characteristics of GCPA in China from 2000 to 2020. Subsequently, a spatial Durbin model with time and space fixed effects is applied to identify the key factors influencing changes in the level of GCPA. The findings are further contextualized to explore opportunities for leveraging GCPA to promote sustainable land resource development. The results reveal that, from temporal variation trends in GCPA, the overall level of GCPA in China has exhibited a steady upward trend. From temporal variation characteristics in GCPA, the provinces contributing to GCPA have gradually concentrated in Heilongjiang, Henan, Shandong, and Anhui, demonstrating significant provincial convergence. From spatial variation trends in GCPA, while the global Moran's I of GCPA experienced brief declines in 2009 and 2018, it has generally shown a steadily increasing trend, reflecting strong spatial dependence. From spatial variation characteristics in GCPA, the spatial distribution of GCPA exhibits polarization, with provinces transitioning between high-high (H-H) and low-low (L-L) agglomeration clusters. This indicates that regions with lower grain production capacity are likely to experience further declines, regardless of their proximity to high-production regions. The analysis identifies agricultural transportation infrastructure as the most critical factor promoting GCPA. Conversely, excessive use of chemical fertilizers and labor inputs in grain crop production are found to hinder GCPA. Based on these findings, the study recommends enhancing agricultural transportation infrastructure and improving the efficiency of traditional agricultural inputs to elevate GCPA levels, thereby fostering sustainable land resource development.
