Towards the synthesis of reliable and resilient complex networks

Description:

Process synthesis methodologies have traditionally focused on optimizing the economic criteria. However, owing to the complexity of real systems, external factors, such as expected or unexpected events or disturbances, negatively affect the performance of optimal networks. In this context, it becomes essential to consider the effect of such events on the performance of the network in the early design stages. This work presents a comprehensive review of the contributions related to this relevant topic, focusing on two widely utilized indicators: reliability and resilience. Reliability focuses on the probability of system failures due to disturbances, and resilience analyzes the behavior of the system after disturbances and its capacity to recover over time. Relevant contributions are reviewed, which present deterministic and stochastic methods to estimate these indicators, with a special focus on the design phase. Moreover, this work also presents a perspective on using machine learning methods on complex systems datasets as an emerging direction for enhancing the estimation of these properties. This contribution highlights recent advancements in this field and emphasizes the relevance of resilience and reliability as key metrics for developing safer processes with improved operability.

A Decade in Hijacked Journals: What Will be the Future Trend?

Purpose: Hijacked journals are fraudulent websites that mimic legitimate journals and, by charging authors, publish manuscripts. The current editorial endeavors to provide a close view of current literature. This editorial piece analyzes 10 years of research on hijacked journals and endeavors to shed light on future trends. Methods: Current research uses a bibliometric approach to analyze data and discuss results. The OpenAlex has been used for data collection. Some of the data analysis was conducted using OpenAlex. The other study was done using Bibliometrix, and the date is limited to publication between 2014 and 2024. Results: The findings provide a close view of the published literature in terms of access type, growth, topics, most frequent words, country contribution, top publishers, and alignment of literature with sustainable development goals. Conclusion: The gap in current literature is the limitation in easily usable methods to be accessible by all researchers for hijacked journal detection and data analysis. The use of artificial intelligence can be promising.

Harnessing community participation tourism development in Himalayan region of Uttarakhand State, India

The article aims to evaluate the participation of below-poverty-line local community in tourism-related business activity in Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. Further, this article addressed for those who work in the tourism sector. The study employs a mix of methods, including survey data from 500 respondents with a random sampling approach, using Analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical tools for analysis, other methods were interviews and observations at six tourism sites in Garhwal and four sites in Kumaun. Our findings showed that there has declined in community participation in tourism development, due to the lack of economic benefits obtained in the tourism sector, many believe that the tourism sector does not provide much income growth for them and does not make a significant contribution to the development of their region. Moreover, lack of understanding is considered the basis for community’s inability to play an active role, and lack of stakeholders’ involvement in encouraging them to improve their economy and culture through the tourism sector. Ultimately, this research also underlines the existence of some efforts by tourism travel to encourage public trust, which can help reduce poverty and increase community trust in tourism development in their region.

Design and control for torque ripple reduction of a 3-phase switched reluctance motor

A major problem in switched reluctance motor is torque ripple, which causes undesirable acoustic noise and vibration. This work focuses on reducing the undesirable torque ripple in 6/4-pole three-phase switched reluctance motor by geometry modification and using control technique. The proposed method combined the specially skewed rotor pole shape with instantaneous torque control with sinusoidal torque sharing function. The results of geometry modification are analysed through the three-dimensional finite element simulation to determine the appropriate skewing angle. The drive performances of conventional and modified motor are compared through the simulations. The effectiveness of the proposed method is also demonstrated and verified by the simulations.

Cognitive Approaches to Multimodal Mobility: Integrating E-Scooters with Public Transport in Győr, Hungary

The Public transport and micromobility roles, particularly electric scooters (e-scooters), are increasingly recognised as pivotal for sustainable urban mobility when integrated rather than made to compete. Cognitive mobility behaviour—how individuals select and combine transport modes—was examined through a systematic literature review, traffic counts conducted at peak-hour junctions, and an online survey of residents’ travel habits in Győr, Hungary. It was found that 46% of trips are made by private car, 24% by public transport, 8% by bicycle, 22% on foot, and only 1–3% by e-scooter. E-scooters were observed to be primarily used for short trips and first/last-mile connections, and reductions in car dependence were noted when e-scooters were integrated with public transport. The survey revealed that e-scooters most often replace walking (42%) and public transport (36%), with limited substitution of private car trips (13%). Significant gaps were identified in multimodal integration, infrastructure, legal frameworks, traffic monitoring, and public awareness. It is recommended that multimodal hubs, dedicated e-scooter lanes, improved traffic counting, and clearer regulations be implemented to support modal shift, enhance safety, and maximise environmental benefits.

Genome-Wide Association Study of Exercise Addiction Among Elite Wrestlers

Background: Exercise addiction, marked by an inability to control exercise and associated with distress that clinically impairs daily activities, is a significant but underrecognized issue in physical activity and health. While its physiological, psychological, and behavioral aspects have been studied, the genetic basis of exercise addiction remains poorly understood, requiring further investigation. The present study conducted a genome-wide association study of exercise addiction among elite Turkish wrestlers. Methods: The sample comprised 67 male wrestlers (34 freestyle wrestlers and 33 Greco-Roman wrestlers). Exercise addiction was assessed using the Exercise Addiction Scale. Whole-genome genotyping was performed using DNA microarray. Results: Using a genome-wide approach (p < 1.0 × 10⁵), we identified six suggestively significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with exercise addiction status. Of these, the high-addiction alleles of five SNPs (PRDM10 rs74345126, near PTPRU rs72652685, HADHB rs6745226, XIRP2 rs17614860, and near GAREM2 rs1025542) have previously been associated with an increased risk of mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression or higher levels of physical activity. We also examined potential associations between the genetic markers previously linked to addiction-related traits such as obsessive–compulsive disorder and cigarette smoking, and personality traits linked to negative emotions including neuroticism. Using this candidate gene approach (p < 0.05), we identified three additional SNPs associated with exercise addiction in the same direction of association (DEFB135 rs4841662, BCL11A rs7599488, and CSRNP3 rs1551336). Conclusions: The present study provides preliminary evidence for the genetic basis of exercise addiction, highlighting specific SNPs that may play a role in the development of this condition among elite wrestlers.

Configuring Green Growth in the Age of Sustainability: Energy and Resource Use Trends in EU Economies

In an era of intensifying global competition where nations aggressively pursue economic advancement, the imperative to balance progress with ecological preservation has become paramount. However, the race for advancement should not harm nature or future generations. Our study investigates the drivers that can lead to green growth, aligning with sustainable development principles that integrate economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social equity as per the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), across nine Western European countries from 2010 to 2019. By utilizing panel data from reputable sources, this research investigates the influence of globalization, natural resource rents, renewable energy consumption, trade openness, and total energy consumption on green growth. Employing contemporary panel diagnostic tests, cointegration analyses, and fixed- and random-effects models, the study also validates its findings through quantile regression, fully modified ordinary least squares, and dynamic ordinary least squares. Our study has fulfilled its destiny by finding the right drivers. According to various analyses, globalization and trade openness consistently and significantly promote green growth, confirming their potential as reliable mechanisms for achieving green growth. The complex impact of renewable energy consumption and natural resource rents opens a new door for exploration by revealing the transitional barriers, such as initial costs and policy lags, in contrast to maintaining the resource rent tendency. However, the beneficial impact of total energy consumption of carbon and fossil fuel underscores the urgency of effective resource utilization and a shift toward renewable sources to decouple growth from unsustainable consumption before running out.

Infection by SARS-CoV-2 in a rescued serval (Leptailurus serval, Schreber, 1776)

Description:

In late November 2021, a male serval (Leptailurus serval) which had escaped from an unknown holding facility was observed in the Bükk Mountains of Northern Hungary. A few days were needed to capture the animal with a live trap, after which it was transported to a national Rescue Centre at the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden. The exact origin of the specimen was never identified and apart from being emaciated, it seemed only to be stressed and weakened by the cold weather and starvation. Contrary to the initial fair prognosis, 2.5 days after admittance, the animal rapidly developed pronounced respiratory and central nervous system signs and despite intensive treatment died within a few hours. The subsequent diagnostic investigation revealed that the cause of death was SARS-CoV-2 infection. These diagnostic steps excluded other possible, lethal felid pathogens as causative agents and confirmed that the disease process was attributed to this virus.

An interval-valued triangular fuzzy decision analytics model for analyzing surface water quality of urban lakes for sustainable management

We present a comparative assessment of the surface water quality (SWQ) of two prominent lakes in Udaipur, India: Pichola Lake (PL) and Fateh Sagar Lake (FS), during two distinct seasons, pre-monsoon (PM) and post-monsoon (POM). We measure the physicochemical parameters for assessing the SWQs of PL and FS during the PM and POM seasons. The physicochemical parameters are evaluated (in accordance with the standard specifications) within specified intervals, categorized as excellent, allowable, and unsuitable. For a precise discrimination among the alternatives in a scalable modeling framework while offsetting the uncertainty (imposed due to sample collection and seasonality), the present work uses interval-valued TFNs (IVTFNs). We utilize a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework, incorporating the opinion weight criteria method (OWCM) and root assessment method (RAM), to rank the SWQs of the lakes. The OWCM method provides a reliable outcome under imprecision and limited data, while avoiding the oversimplification of diverse alternatives. RAM offers a realistic treatment of contributions by inferior criteria while rewarding superior performance. We observe that FS demonstrates an inseparable SWQ for both the PM and POM seasons. At the same time, PL reports a significant effect of seasonal changes, where PM performance is found to be better.
