Comparative Analysis of Driving Performance and Visual and Physiological Responses Between Professional and Civilian Drivers in Simulated Environments

Current research and development in understanding road users’ driving behaviors play a key role in improving traffic safety. Recently, several driving simulators have been employed as a suitable approach to investigate several drivers’ responses in challenging traffic scenarios. Although professional drivers represent a particular category among driving populations, the body of literature about their comparative behavioral and psychological characteristics remains limited. This study examined the differences in driving performance and visual and physiological responses between civilian and professional drivers in a simulated environment. A total of 30 drivers, with an equal split between professional and civilian categories, took part in a series of driving simulations. The simulations incorporated various infrastructure types, including four cone avoidance tasks and a high-speed motorway task. This study collected comprehensive data on performance metrics, hand usage, heart rate, and eye movements. Eye-tracking technology was used to measure visual attention. The findings revealed that during cone avoidance scenarios, civilian drivers exhibited a similar performance, visual behavior, and physiological response, except for the speed, experiment duration, and throttle, to professional drivers. In the motorway scenario, all metrics showed no significant difference between the two driver groups. These results highlight the need for cautious interpretation, particularly given the limitations of the sample. Revalidation is needed in larger studies, especially for understanding the differences between drivers’ metrics, which is crucial to elevate drivers’ safety, and assessing training programs in Hungary.

All known trachyuropodid mites (Acari: Uropodina: Trachyuropodidae) are listed together with diagnoses of the family Trachyuropodidae and trachyuropodid genera. A new illustrated key to trachyuropodid genera is also presented. The second species of the genus Trachyibana (T. kozari sp. nov.) is described and illustrated from Singapore. Effects of Tourists' Perceived Crowding on Tourist Loyalty Based on Overcrowded Tourist Attraction in Bangladesh: The Mediating Role of Destination Attractiveness

For the study, the researchers proposed a multidimensional way to measure tourist-perceived crowding (TPC) and an integrated approach to tourist loyalty from a customer perspective based on the stimulus organism response model. A structural equation modeling was applied to examine the relationship among variables using the data collected from Bangladesh's crowded and popular tourist attractions. The study found that neutral crowding has significant negative effects and personal crowding has significant positive effects on destination attractiveness, but social crowding has no relationship with destination attractiveness. Moreover, social crowding directly affects tourist loyalty, but neutral and personal crowding indirectly affect tourist loyalty by mediating destination attractiveness. This study suggested a new result: TPC has both negative and positive impacts on destination attractiveness in overcrowded destinations. From the management perspective, the study suggested interesting insights for crowding and destination management, which ultimately affect tourist loyalty.

Decision support for sustainable circular food supply chain in Iran: A fuzzy multi-criteria approach

As an interconnected network, the food supply chain links multiple actors across production, processing, distribution and consumption. While it plays a vital role in ensuring food security, safety and economic resilience, the sector also faces growing challenges related to its environmental impact and long-term sustainability. Addressing these issues requires a systemic shift toward sustainable circular supply chain models that support net-zero objectives, decarbonization pathways, and ecosystem-wide coordination. This study aims to explore the key factors influencing sustainable circular supply chain management (SCSCM) across five major sectors of the food industry in Iran: grain, dairy, meat, sugar and carbohydrate products. By incorporating the concept of dynamic capabilities into the supply chain context, this study underscores the importance of organizational adaptability and innovation in facilitating the transition toward circular, low-emission supply chains. A snowball-based literature review revealed a lack of prioritization frameworks tailored to the food industry in Iran. To address this gap, the fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) was used to identify critical factors, followed by the fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) to evaluate and rank them based on expert judgment. The findings indicate that supplier facilities, trade credit, supplier risk management, environmental policy and environmental costs are the five most critical enablers of circular and sustainable transformation within the food supply chain. These identified factors offer a foundation for policymakers and industry leaders to design long-term, ecosystem-oriented strategies that enable systemic change and accelerate progress toward net-zero goals within the sector.

Performance evaluation of machine learning algorithms to assess soil erosion in Mediterranean farmland: A case-study in Syria

The development of new techniques, such as machine learning (ML), can provide better insight into the processes and drivers of soil erosion and runoff. However, the performance of these techniques to assess soil erosion in agricultural landscapes is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of four machine learning algorithms, generalized linear model (GLM), Random Forest (RF), elastic net regression (EN) and multiple adaptive regression splines (MARS), in predicting soil erosion and runoff in Syria. Soil erosion and runoff were measured on three experimental plots (2.25 m × 1.50 m × 0.50 m, 0.10 m depth in the soil), combined with three different slopes and land use types: RS (8%, olive), SS (12%, citrus), KS (20%, pomegranate). Both erosion and runoff were determined after rainfall events of >10 mm between October 2019 and April 2020. Based on 24 effective rainfall events, the average soil erosion was 0.18 ± 0.14 kg m−2 per event in KS, 0.14 ± 0.11 kg m−2 per event in SS, and 0.12 ± 0.10 kg/m2 per event in RS. Regression analysis indicated strong relationship between the rainfalls and the runoff, the highest connection was recorded in the KS plot (r2 = 0.85; p < 0.05 n = 24). The analysis of covariance indicated that only the runoff had a significant impact on soil erosion (p = 0.02) with a medium effect (ε2p = 0.26). However, the impacts of rainfall events and slope categories on soil erosion were limited (ε2p < 0.01) and not significant (p > 0.05). ML techniques were usually efficient in the prediction, the RF and MARS models were the most accurate: RF had the strongest correlation with the measured values (r = 0.85) with a low estimation error (0.06 kg m−2), but MARS's standard deviation (SD) was closer to the recorded values' SD. GLM and EN were the weakest predictor models. Modeled values of the slightest slope (8%) had the worst accuracies, and the predictions of the 12% slope were the best in all models. This study provides important insights into the usefulness of machine learning techniques and algorithms in predicting the rate of soil erosion and runoff in agricultural dominated landscapes. We highlighted that the RF and MARS algorithms were better predictors of soil erosion and runoff in the coastal region of Syria.

Bridges are special structures that provide a transport connection between areas divided by a physical barrier. Vehicles passing over bridges cause vibrations in the structural elements of the bridge, which can damage these structural elements over time. The aim of our research was to investigate the vibrations generated by vehicles on Hungary's first steel girder welded bridge, which was subjected to the maximum allowable load. In this paper, we describe the measurements we have carried out, analyse the results, present the vehicle-bridge interaction model we have constructed and the computer simulation we have carried out by using it. Our research results are intended to contribute to accident prevention and the safe operation of bridges.

Lactose intolerance: The most significant nutritional recommendations of lactose free diet

Background: Milk and dairy products play a key role in healthy diet. In case of lactose intolerance, the digestion of these products becomes difficult. It is associated with stomach and intestinal complaints. Purpose: The purpose of the manuscript is to summarize the literature on lactose, lactose intolerance, lactose-free diet and lactose-free products development opportunities. We hope that we can contribute to a more accurate understanding of the lactose-free diet and reveal connections between consumer expectations and consumption. Methods: Electronic searches were conducted in Google Scholar, Medline, PubMed and Science Direct databases. We used 34 specialist literature and 3 URL to write our conference publication. Results: We summarized the most important characteristics of lactose, the symptoms and treatment options of lactose intolerance, the importance of lactose-free diet and calcium supplementation in the therapy of lactose intolerance and the latest and most informative publications on the development of lactose-free functional foods. Conclusion: Today, the consumption of lactose-free products is an outstanding way to treat the growing number of people with lactose intolerance. The food industry also pays special attention to the application of new technologies and product development. We hope to contribute to a wider understanding of lactose, lactose intolerance, the lactose-free diet and lactose-free product development opportunities with our conference manuscript.

Multi-period natural gas pipeline scheduling optimisation integrated with LNG cold energy cascade utilisation

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), as a vital form of natural gas resources, has exhibited a steadily increasing trend in global production and trade volumes. LNG terminals are facing the challenge of how to recover and utilise cold energy in a safe and efficient regasification process, while coordinating with the natural gas pipeline network transport scheduling. This study proposes an integrated regulation and collaborative optimisation approach for natural gas pipeline networks and LNG cold energy cascade utilisation systems. For natural gas pipeline network systems, P-Graph develops multi-period gas-electric interconnected supply chain network to optimise resource allocation. For the LNG cold energy cascade utilisation system, a dual Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) framework for both power generation and refrigeration is developed, as well as thermodynamic analysis and heat integration techniques are applied to optimise system efficiency. Using a coastal LNG terminal in Zhejiang, China, as a case study, when the LNG regasification flow rate is 62.46 t/h, cold energy generates electricity of 2,335.94 kW and air-conditioning cooling load of 1,651.5 kW, system efficiency reaches 44.75 %. The peak regulation and gas storage effect of LNG is significant, which helps to alleviate that energy shortage in the region, and the coupled system of LNG and natural gas pipeline network improves energy utilisation efficiency and economic benefits for LNG industry chain.

Analysis of early warning signal of land degradation risk based on time series of remote sensing data

This study explores the spatio-temporal dynamics of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to detect early signs of land degradation. Utilizing high-resolution NDVI data from the Google Earth Engine, spanning from 2004 to 2023 with a 30-meter resolution, this research analyzes monthly variations. To illustrate these dynamics, the study focuses on Sabzevar County, located in northeastern Iran, which extends over 7,217 km2and is approximately 220 kilometers distant from Mashhad. Validation of the NDVI data was performed using field observations from strategically located vegetation plots. One square meter plots were systematically established along 100-meter transects (10 transects in total), where the vegetation coverage in each plot was quantitatively assessed by experts. Comprehensive statistical analysis incorporated Kendall's tie test, alongside measurements of autocorrelation, coefficient of variation, and standard deviation, using R software to assess the trends and intensities of NDVI changes. The findings revealed a critical breakpoint in 2020, with increases in all three statistical indices—autocorrelation 0.82, coefficient of variation 0.65, and standard deviation 0.58—indicative of accelerating degradation prior to this year. Furthermore, the intensity of NDVI changes varied significantly across the study area, ranging from 0.05 in central and northern regions to 0.76 in the western parts. This research underscores the value of integrating field data with remote sensing technology to provide a robust analytical tool for early detection of land degradation. This method enables precise, timely assessment and proactive management of vulnerable ecosystems, particularly in arid regions.
