Description:

This research study examines the current status of green energy-specific financial literacy in Latin America, exploring the relationship between financial knowledge and investment decision-making in renewable energy. The study indicates that while Latin America has made tremendous strides in the uptake of renewable energy, with the region increasing its renewable capacity by 51% between 2015 and 2022, there remains a significant gap in financial literacy specific to green energy investments. The findings project that enhancing green energy financial literacy can significantly accelerate the region's transition to sustainable energy systems and assist in reaching the net-zero goals of 15 Latin American countries. The report concludes with a recommendation to policy makers, financial institutions, and educational institutions to introduce tailored financial literacy programs that address green energy investment knowledge gaps in the region.

Through interdisciplinarity that engages environmental justice theory, financial inclusion frameworks, and sustainable development perspectives, this research reveals how limited financial literacy in renewable energy technologies consolidates socioeconomic inequalities while advancing environmental degradation. The research concludes that intense financial literacy programs to renewable energy literacy, combined with comprehensive policy frameworks, are essential to providing just energy transitions, which address both environmental and social justice concerns in Mexico's path toward sustainable development.

Biochar-fertilizer mixture: does plant life history trait determine fertilizer application rate?

The annual cumin and perennial fennel are economically important medicinal crops of cold dry regions of Pakistan. We hypothesized that the cumin, which produces 2–3 times less biomass, will respond to lower rates of mixture of biochar with synthetic NPK fertilizer or manure, compared to fennel. The NPK, poultry manure and their mixture with wood-derived or cow manure-derived biochars were applied for three consecutive years. No positive relation between application rate of biochar-mixed fertilizers and yield of both crops was observed over three years of study, except that manure-derived biochar-NPK mixture had a positive relation (R2  = 0.99, P = 0.01) with the yield of fennel only during the third year. Significant positive influences of biochar-based fertilizers compared to control were observed for cumin and fennel of third year cropping. The co-amendment of NPK (0.14 kg ha−1) with manure-derived biochar (6.6 t ha−1) consistently increased the yield of cumin during the first two years of cropping, as opposed to NPK fertilizer. Cumin had a greater seed:stover biomass ratio when it received the co-amendment of wood-derived biochar with NPK or poultry manure. Our findings indicate that there is some potential for biochar-fertilizer amendments to improve the growth of these high-value medicinal crops.

It has long been known that, in addition to genetic factors, epigenetic effects fundamentally influence the functioning of the living organism. Although the genome of individual cells of the human body is almost identical, the access, transcription and expression of genetic information are influenced by epigenetic effects. The eukaryotic nuclear DNA is wrapped around histone octamers to form the nucleosome, the basic unit of the chromatin structure. The covalent modifications of the histone proteins cause epigenetic changes. Human conception, followed by the division and implantation of the fertilized egg into the maternal decidua, is a complex process that requires the coordinated functioning of embryological, immunological processes and anatomical structures. The steps of these processes are genetically determined and the coarse- and fine-tuning of these effects occurs at the epigenetic level by external effects such as hormones, toxins, changes in diet, infections, or cell differentiation. The most significant rearrangements occur in the embryonic period after the fertilization of the egg. In our paper, we review the literature to present the effects that influence the fine-tuning of genome function at the epigenetic level. Disturbances of these mechanisms are the basis of several pathologies that threaten conception, implantation and successful pregnancy, such as recurrent miscarriage, preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction or premature birth. In addition, epigenetic alterations acting during the period of plasticity of individual development can cause diseases that appear in the young, adult and even old age of the offspring, which can even be inherited through generations.

Achipterina (Oribatida, Ceratokalummidae) currently comprises four species, collectively distributed in the tropical and subtropical areas. We describe a new species—A. mangrovicasp. nov.—based on adults collected from litter of a mangrove forest in the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, southern Vietnam. It is the first representative of the family discovered in the Vietnamese fauna. The new species is characterized in having a bidentate rostrum, setiform rostral and lamellar setae, long inner tooth of lamellar cusp, unilaterally fusiform bothridial seta, long interlamellar seta, dentate anterior part of pteromorph, oval and oblique notogastral porose area Aa. The morphology of the gnathosoma, ovipositor, and legs are presented for the first time for Achipterina. Do economic achievements and environmental consequences coincide? The case of cyclicity

The significance of green economic growth opens up a new space for studying cyclical development processes, raising the issue of coexistence between sustainable development and the cyclical features of economic growth. The purpose of this study is to identify statistically significant relationships between cyclical components (fluctuations) of economic growth and environmental consequences within national economic systems. The paper utilizes Hodrick–Prescott and Butterworth bandpass filters to detrend dynamic series of ecological and economic development, highlighting cyclical components (fluctuations) that are analyzed for the presence of correlation in the referenced and lag periods (to identify procyclical and lag dynamics). The analysis uses statistical data from the World Bank for Ukraine and Hungary for 1991–2022. The results prove that for Ukraine with an increase in the cyclical component of GDP per capita there is a cyclical increase in pollution indicators, according to the Butterworth filter for NOx emissions from industrial combustion (correlation coefficient 0.72), F-gases emissions from industrial processes (correlation coefficient 0.77), CO2 emissions excluding LULUCF (correlation coefficient 0.70). The situation with Hungary is different, and the business cycle is not correlated with pollution fluctuations. The paper does not find a statistically significant relationship between the business cycle and fluctuations in methane (CH4) emissions from waste (Mt CO2e). Overall, most economic and environmental components are procyclical in nature, with the strongest correlation in the reference period for a developing industrial economy (Ukraine). In contrast, there is no such link within a more developed economy (Hungary).

This study examines the impact of cognitive load (CL) on lower limb biomechanics during the take-off preparation phase of the platform serve in tennis players of varying skill levels. Fifteen elite and fifteen amateur tennis players performed platform serves before and after completing a 30-minute Stroop task designed to induce CL. Key biomechanical parameters, including joint range of motion (ROM), joint moments, centre of mass (COM) displacement, and ground reaction force (GRF), were assessed using both kinematic and kinetic analysis. After CL, the biomechanical performance of amateur athletes significantly decreased compared to elite athletes. Specifically, amateur athletes showed a 14.19° lower ankle joint range of motion in the sagittal plane (p < 0.001), a 0.04-meter lower COM displacement in the frontal plane (p = 0.017), and a 0.15 Nm/BW lower knee extension moment (p < 0.001). CL adversely affects the lower limb biomechanics of amateur players more than elite players, with elite players demonstrating greater stability. These findings suggest that elite players have developed more efficient motor control mechanisms through extensive training. Tailored training interventions that account for different skill levels could enhance performance stability and mitigate the risk of injury.

The vehicle industry being in the middle of transformation, the development of electric drives has come into engineers' focus. The parameter evaluation of dynamic systems can be cumbersome when having nonlinearity in the structure, for example nonlinear stiffness characteristics. In such case, the standard linear approach, including EMA (Experimental Modal Analysis), modal superposition, FRF measurement (Frequency Response Function) and modal synthesis can not be applied. However, one of the main challenges in addressing nonlinearities is the lack of general tools to approach them. In this paper, a general framework to study nonlinearities in a structural dynamic context is presented. The method relies on standard random and sine sweep testing approaches to detect and localize nonlinearities, and on dedicated processing techniques to analyze the data and extract information on the nature of the analyzed nonlinearity. This approach is then used to study the behavior of an assembly of a lamella package of PMSM (Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Machines), where permanent magnets are embedded in the laminations. The magnets are surrounded by resin that holds them in place in their grooves. Characterizing the dynamic properties of such a structure is a relevant task in engineering development, for verifying numerical predictions. In this case, the relative motion of lamellas as well as the heavy influence of the polymer resin's properties may result in nonlinear behavior.
