Prediction of Scour Depth for Diverse Pier Shapes Utilizing Two-Dimensional Hydraulic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System Sediment Model

Examining scouring around bridge piers is crucial for ensuring water-related infrastructure’s long-term safety and stability. Accurate forecasting models are essential for addressing scour, especially in complex water systems where traditional methods fall short. This study investigates the application of the HEC-RAS 2D sedimentation model, which has recently become available for detailed sediment analysis, to evaluate its effectiveness in predicting scoring around various pier shapes and under different water conditions. This study offers a comprehensive assessment of the model’s predictive capabilities by focusing on variables such as water velocity, shear stress, and riverbed changes. Particular attention was paid to the influence of factors like floating debris and different pier geometries on scour predictions. The results demonstrate that while the HEC-RAS 2D model generally provides accurate predictions for simpler pier shapes—achieving up to 85% precision—it shows varied performance for more complex designs and debris-influenced scenarios. Specifically, the model overpredicted scouring depths by approximately 20% for diamond-shaped piers and underpredicted by 15% for square piers in debris conditions. Elliptical piers, in contrast, experienced significantly less erosion, with scour depths up to 30% shallower compared to other shapes. This study highlights the novel application of the HEC-RAS 2D model in this context and underscores its strengths and limitations. Identified issues include difficulties in modeling water flow and debris-induced bottlenecks. This research points to the improved calibration of sediment movement parameters and the development of advanced computational techniques to enhance scour prediction accuracy in complex environments. This work contributes valuable insights for future research and practical applications in civil engineering, especially where traditional scour mitigation methods, such as apron coverings, are not feasible.

Decision-analytics-based electric vehicle charging station location selection: A cutting-edge fuzzy rough framework

Electric vehicles are of great significance in supporting sustainable transportation and sustainability. In parallel with the increasing demand for such vehicles worldwide, the electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) market has grown dramatically. The study presents a practical model for selecting EVCS sites integrating multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), fuzzy, and rough sets. The research aims to bridge the gap in evaluating EVCS locations by leveraging the superiorities of fuzzy and rough set theories to address vagueness effectively. Firstly, assessment criteria cover the environment, economic, technology, and social drivers. Secondly, a fuzzy Defining Interrelationships Between Ranked criteria (F-DIBR) model is applied to determine the weight values of siting factors. Last, for the first time, the Mixed Aggregation by COmprehensive Normalization Technique (MACONT) with hybrid fuzzy rough numbers (FRN-MACONT) model is proposed to obtain the ranking results. Further, a new approach for defining hybrid fuzzy rough numbers is suggested, based on an improved methodology for determining rough numbers' lower and upper limits, allowing consideration of mutual relations between a set of objects and flexible representation of rough boundary intervals depending on the dynamic environmental conditions. The study's novelties reside in deciding the importance of the driving forces used in determining the EVCS site location with a novel method, F-DIBR, and selecting the optimal site with a new FRN-MACONT approach. The results show that “economy” is the most significant criterion, whereas “system reliability” is the most critical sub-criterion. The findings also indicate that the Konak territory performs the best, whereas the Cigli territory is the second best. Comprehensive sensitivity analysis verifies the proposed framework's validity, robustness, and effectiveness. As per the research findings and analyses, some managerial implications are further discussed. The approach introduced has the potential to contribute to the green transport literature.

Due to its attractive possibilities and potential benefits, the use of big data analytics is gaining popularity in both real operations and theoretical discourse. The goal of this research is to identify the factors that influence the adoption of big data analytics and their impact on the performance of supply chains in the manufacturing industry, examining how information sharing between firms affects this relationship with the help of a survey to collect and analyze data, with a sample size of 200 respondents. The study discovered that technological, organizational, environmental, and perceived risk factors all had a significant impact on big data analytics adoption. The study's findings also show a substantial and favorable relationship between big data analytics adoption and supply chain performance. Finally, it was observed that the act of sharing information had a moderating effect on the link between big data analytics adoption and firm performance.

Measurement and analysis of logistic stresses in packaging with a carrying handle

Carrying handles of packagings have a great importance in the comfortable and safe handling of packed products. Producers and consumers have to face occasionally damaged carrying handles that considerably increase the possibility of the damage of the product. These carrying handles are of a wide variety, depending on the package size, packaging material, weight, etc. The main reason for frequent product damages is due to the fact that producers lack the sufficient knowledge of stresses. In this paper we analyze the stresses and propose a measurement process for packaging with a carrying handle. We measure the stresses via a range of standard equipment (cameras, accelerometers, shaker table). In addition, we provide a general framework and the description of a test environment for the accurate reproduction of the logistic stresses appearing in packaging with a carrying handle.

The other side of war or migration and labor market imbalances: Evidence from Eastern Europe for the period 2014–2025

This study investigates whether war-induced forced migration has led to persistent imbalances in Eastern European labor markets, with a specific focus on matching efficiency. The analysis utilizes a quasi-experimental design combining Eurostat and UNHCR quarterly panel data for the EU-27 from 2014 to 2025. The methodology employs a multi-period difference-in-differences approach and Beveridge curve regressions to isolate the specific impact of the Temporary Protection Directive flows. The findings indicate an upward and outward shift in the Beveridge curve following the 2022 shock, characterized by a simultaneous increase in vacancies and unemployment. The results demonstrate that high institutional integration capacity dampens these shock effects, while persistence primarily observed in service-intensive sectors. The study suggests that reducing matching costs through targeted language equivalence accelerators and fair placement algorithms is essential for market stabilization.

From Over-Tourism to Under-Tourism via COVID-19: Lessons for Sustainable Tourism Management

With various strains of the novel coronavirus emerging during the last few years, there is a need to reinvent and manage the tourism industry by engaging various stakeholders. Industry and policymakers need to observe the shift and curate tourism-related products and offerings accordingly. In light of the increasing demand for innovations and future directions in the post-COVID-19 period, this article conducts a bibliometric analysis for sustainable tourism studies spanning the years 1990–2021. This paper presents an integrative review of tourism, environment and sustainable tourism to reveal geographical, contextual, and methodological directions for future research. The comprehensive analysis includes contributions on topics and methods, country collaborations, and thematic analysis. The findings are consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals of sustainable production and consumption (SDG-12), with a particular emphasis on sustainable tourism to promote local culture and create jobs (SDG-12.b) and on sustainable growth (SDG-13). The study’s findings can be used to inform future policies and directions; for example, the findings indicate that the hospitality industry is facing challenges that necessitate new regulations to address its socioeconomic and environmental impacts.

Enhancing the resolution of point clouds is crucial in achieving detailed and precise 3D representations for various applications. Factors such as sensor calibration, scanning range, and environmental capability play a pivotal role in determining the overall quality of the captured point cloud data. Moreover, issues related to noise, occlusions, and sensor limitations can further impact the accuracy of the modelling outcome, underscoring the importance of optimizing point cloud resolution. Thus, researchers started to build new architectures with the aim of produce more dense and complete representation with higher resolution. Different methods have been created to achieve successful upsampling, such as interpolation techniques, deep learning strategies, and optimization algorithms. In this paper, we take a closer look at this exceptionally fast-developing field of science. According to this aim, the reader will better understand point cloud upsampling technology.

Effects of herbal plant supplementation on immunity and antioxidant status in mid-lactation dairy cows

High-yield dairy farms have maximised their productivity, which is a challenge concerning animal physiology even beyond the transition period. While several studies have verified a wide range of beneficial effects of plant essential oils during the periparturient period in dairy cows, their effects in mid-lactation are less studied. However, this period is critical for maintaining milk production and metabolic stability in high-yielding cows. The objective of the present study is to determine the effects of supplementation with herbal plants on immunity and antioxidant status in mid-lactation dairy cows. Thirty-six Holstein-Friesian cows used in this experiment were randomly assigned to 6 groups (1 control and 5 treatments, n = 6/group). The treatments were conducted using oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, or yarrow, while the control was exempt from any supplementation. The feeding experiment lasted 14 days. Milk samples were collected on days 1 and 14 to assess milk quality. Milk and blood samples for molecular analysis were collected on day 15, following the 14-day feeding trial. The applied herbs were standardised to two grams of essential oil/cow/day. All parameters were analyzed by a linear mixed model and expressed relative to the control group. The basil essential oil resulted in a significant increase in the total immunoglobulin level in milk, and the serum IgM level was found to be significantly higher in the rosemary. Significantly higher serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) values were detected in the oregano, thyme, rosemary, and yarrow groups. Significant increases were observed in milk TAC for groups given oregano and thyme. The activity of the superoxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) was found to be significantly higher in the oregano group, and significantly lower C-reactive protein levels, an indicator of inflammation and oxidative stress, were measured in the oregano and rosemary groups. Of the antioxidant-related genes, a significantly higher expression of the SOD gene was detected in the oregano group, while for the glutathione peroxidase gene, significantly higher mRNA expression was observed in the oregano and thyme groups. In conclusion, our results suggest that dietary supplementation with oregano and thyme improves antioxidant status in mid-lactation dairy cows. These findings may support the development of more precisely tailored feeding protocols to enhance well-being and promote the health and performance of dairy cows during mid-lactation.

Cyanobacteria-Fungi Co-Cultures: Which Partner Contributes to Antifungal Activity?

Cyanobacteria synthesize secondary metabolites with antifungal activity, making them potential biopesticide agents for sustainable, eco-friendly agriculture. Programmes to identify Cyanobacterial strains with effective bioactivity generally screen strains maintained in culture collections. These strains are often monoclonal but non-axenic and this may potentially influence the bioactivity of the generated biomass. The present study investigated in vitro antifungal activity of Nostoc muscorum MACC-189 and N. linckia MACC-612 strains co-isolated with fungal co-partners and maintained in the Mosonmagyaróvár Algal Culture Collection (MACC). The fungal co-partners were isolated from the Cyanobacterial stock cultures and identified as Purpureocillium lilacinum and Sarocladium sp., respectively. The cultures were tested against seven phytopathogens. The phytopathogenic fungi were grown on potato dextrose agar plates and suspension cultures of the Cyanobacteria-fungi and isolated fungal co-partners were placed in the centre of the plate. Antifungal effects were assessed semi-quantitatively after 10 days of incubation. The Cyanobacteria-fungal co-cultures had antifungal activity against Monilinia fructigena and Aspergillus sp. with the N. muscorum/P. lilacinum culture being the most effective. The fungal isolates inhibited M. fructigena with P. lilacinum having a dose-dependent response but did not inhibit Aspergillus sp. This suggested that the antifungal effect of the Cyanobacterial cultures on M. fructigena was due to the fungal partner rather than the cyanobacterium while the antifungal effect on Aspergillus sp. was due to the cyanobacterium partner. As it was not possible to maintain living axenic N. muscorum and N. linckia cultures, this could not be conclusively confirmed. These results highlight the importance of either using axenic cultures or identifying the co-isolates when testing Cyanobacteria cultures for antifungal bioactivity.
