Optimization-based parameter tuning of unscented Kalman filter for speed sensorless state estimation of induction machines

State estimation of induction machines may be a difficult problem, due to the non-linear behavior of theirs. For non-linear state estimation, the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is a well-known extension of the linear Kalman filter. Operation of the UKF algorithm strongly depends on the process and measurement noise covariance parameters of the estimator. Determination of these parameters is not straightforward and can be difficult, especially if the number of state variables and hence the system complexity is relatively high. In this paper, the UKF algorithm is applied for speed sensorless state estimation of induction machines in such a way that seven state variables are estimated from the measured stator currents and from the known excitation voltages. In order to tune the noise parameters of the UKF, a new, optimization-based method is presented. This tuning method provides adequate behavior for the observer beside difficult operating conditions as it has been shown by simulation experiment.

Sustainability Challenges of the Interior Design Supply Chain Processes—A Mixed Method Approach with Critical Incident Technique

Environmental awareness is playing an increasingly important role in all segments of the world, with sustainability and recycling being key elements. The aim of the research is to examine the challenges companies face in terms of sustainability when implementing procurement and supply chain management processes related to interior design. The research focused on four main questions: how procurement and supply chain management are reflected in construction processes, what challenges these processes face, and how they can influence the sustainable use of materials in architectural supply chains. The literature review was based on a systematic literature review using the PRISMA screening process and the PEO framework, utilizing the SCOPUS database and processing 70 scientific articles following the selection process. During the research, I also used the Critical Incident Technique (CIT), in which I asked interior designers about their positive and negative experiences with the procurement of sustainable materials and supply chain management processes. The methodology thus provided deeper insight into the decision-making processes of professionals, where sustainability conflicts with economic and operational realities. The qualitative research was supplemented by a questionnaire survey, which aimed to assess sustainability, its prevalence, and professional obstacles. The results of the research show that this topic is a research gap, but the openness of professionals shows a positive trend. Companies face numerous challenges related to new technologies and environmental awareness in order to create or transform well-functioning supply chain management processes.

OPPORTUNITIES AND PERSPECTIVES OF FORMATION OF THE MOUNTAIN TOURISM CLUSTER IN ALMATY AGGLOMERATION

In the current conditions of sustainable development, the main reason for the importance of creating tourism clusters in mountainous areas is determined by competitiveness, the availability of attractive tourist facilities, and the possibility of achieving economic development by increasing the number of tourists. This is due to the fact that recreational resources and landscape features of mountainous areas significantly increase the tourist potential of the territory and contribute to the development of tourism. In connection with this, Almaty agglomeration is one of the most favourable regions for the creation and development of the first mountain tourism cluster in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the opportunities and prospects of mountain tourism cluster development in Almaty agglomeration. The study began with a literature review of the theoretical and practical foundations of mountain tourism cluster formation. The main problems of the enterprises-participants of the mountain tourism cluster and ways to solve them became known in the course of a specially conducted interview. The interview was based on 4 questions pre-designed for tourism industry entrepreneurs participating in the cluster located in the agglomeration and 63 business managers voluntarily participated. As a result of the research the main problems of enterprises-participants of mountain tourism cluster in Almaty agglomeration are revealed and the structural model of mountain tourism cluster development is developed. The model was aimed at mobilising tourism and recreational facilities and service organisations into a unified environment that would form the basis for the formation and development of a mountain tourism cluster. As a competitive advantage of Almaty agglomeration the presence of unique picturesque wildlife, as well as the occupation of such types of active recreation as sports tourism and extreme tourism is defined. Thus, having studied the development potential of mountain tourism cluster in Almaty agglomeration, natural resources and attractions, as well as the current state of the tourism industry, the need to develop a state strategic plan for the development of tourism cluster in Almaty agglomeration was determined. The said plan should fully incorporate marketing strategies, infrastructure development, socio-economic development, environmental cleanliness and safety, and protection of stakeholder rights. The results of this study will be effective in creating a mountain tourism cluster in the Almaty agglomeration, attracting visitors from around the world and stimulating the local economy.

Matrix factorization and neighbor based algorithms for the netflix prize problem

Collaborative filtering (CF) approaches proved to be effective for recommender systems in predicting user preferences in item selection using known user ratings of items. This subfield of machine learning has gained a lot of popularity with the Netix Prize competition started in October 2006. Two major approaches for this problem are matrix factorization (MF) and the neighbor based approach (NB). In this work, we propose various variants of MF and NB that can boost the performance of the usual ensemble based scheme. First, we investigate various regularization scenarios for MF. Second, we introduce two NB methods: one is based on correlation coeficients and the other on linear least squares. At the experimentation part, we show that the proposed approaches compare favorably with existing ones in terms of prediction accuracy and/or required training time. We present results of blending the proposed methods. © 2008 ACM.

This chapter explores the devastating impact of repeated Israeli hostilities on Gaza, especially the recent war; October 2023–January 2025, on industry, innovation, and infrastructure in this region, focusing on the significant setbacks to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 9 (SDG 9). This brutal war has led to widespread destruction of critical infrastructure, including power plants, health facilities, and communication networks, crippling industrial activities and halting technological advancements. The destruction of manufacturing facilities and the scarcity of essential resources have severely limited production capabilities, leading to massive job losses and economic decline. Furthermore, the war has severely hindered the development of new technologies and innovations by destroying educational institutions and research centers, while restrictions on the import of technological equipment and resources have further exacerbated these challenges, limiting access to tools necessary for advancement and growth. Through detailed analysis of reports and scientific publications, this chapter highlights the urgent need for international intervention and support to rebuild industry and infrastructure in Gaza. This comprehensive examination of the impact of the war on Gaza industry, innovation, and critical infrastructure offers valuable insights into the broader challenges of achieving SDG 9 in conflict-affected regions.

SOCIAL INTEGRATION OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS IN UKRAINE: PERCEPTIONS FROM IDPS VS. THE HOST POPULATION

The social integration of internally displaced persons in Ukraine is analysed based on 5 dimensions of social integration: economic, political and religious, social, socio-psychological, and integration into cultural and sports life. The study was conducted using a nationally representative sociological survey of internally displaced persons (500 respondents) and the population of host communities (850 respondents). Differences in the perception of integration are investigated based on comparing the assessments of internally displaced persons and the population of the host communities. The highest integration is obtained in the socio-psychological, political and religious dimensions. The lowest level is in integration into community life. An important empirical result is the lower scores of the population compared to IDPs in almost all 21 criteria for integration. This is an indirect sign of significant social distance and lower readiness of the population of host communities, compared to IDPs themselves, to seek opportunities for interaction. The cluster analysis reveals the links between the most significant factors for successful integration: mutual respect between IDPs and local residents, tolerance, active engagement in local policy-making, and support for country defence. The most crucial obstacles to successful integration according to IDPs’ judgements are lower possibilities compared to the local population in participation in projects aimed at local communities’ development (65,3%), entrepreneurship development (60% of responses), and participation in decision-making regarding the community development (55,9%). The findings are important for developing policies to reduce the social exclusion of IDPs in areas where integration is below average.

Possibilities for Further Development of the Airbags in the Case of Non-conventional Seating Positions

The first ideas and experiments aimed at protecting passengers from the vehicle’s internal components with airbags date back to the 1960s. Twenty years later, the airbag appeared in series production, in December 1980, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W126) was the first serial production car to be equipped with a driver airbag, and since its introduction, the use of airbag technology has been uninterrupted. Airbag systems are currently regarded as almost mandatory protection systems in a vehicle. The article generally presents the development of airbags used in cars, followed by the currently used airbag folding types. After that, the article presents the simulation of the airbag deployment, its types and theoretical background, as well as the most important stages of the deployment of the airbag. In the following, the article presents the results of the research so far in the case of frontal and side crashes. The next section of the article introduces the materials capable of absorbing energy, then details the simulation model built and the airbag concept created. The last part of the article contains an evaluation of the results and the summary. The modified seat examined in the earlier phase of the research and the airbag concept that is the subject of this research also fulfill the set goals, but the latter has a great advantage.

Implant for augmentation of Cerebral blood flow trial-1 (IMPact-1). A single-arm feasibility study evaluating the safety and potential benefit of the Ischemic Stroke System for treatment of acute ischemic stroke

Background The Ischemic Stroke System is a novel device designed to deliver stimulation to the sphenopalatine ganglion(SPG).The SPG sends parasympathetic innervations to the anterior cerebral circulation. In rat stroke models, SPG stimulation results in increased cerebral blood flow, reduced infarct volume, protects the blood brain barrier, and improved neurological outcome. We present here the results of a prospective, multinational, single-arm, feasibility study designed to assess the safety, tolerability, and potential benefit of SPG stimulation inpatients with acute ischemic stroke(AIS). Methods Patients with anterior AIS, baseline NIHSS 7–20 and ability to initiate treatment within 24h from stroke onset, were implanted and treated with the SPG stimulation. Patients were followed up for 90 days. Effect was assessed by comparing the patient outcome to a matched population from the NINDS rt-PA trial placebo patients. Results Ninety-eight patients were enrolled (mean age 57years, mean baseline NIHSS 12 and mean treatment time from stroke onset 19h). The observed mortality rate(12.2%), serious adverse events (SAE)incidence(23.5%) and nature of SAE were within the expected range for the population. The modified intention to treat cohort consisted of 84 patients who were compared to matched patients from the NINDS placebo arm. Patients treated with SPG stimulation had an average mRS lower by 0.76 than the historical controls(CMH test p = 0.001). Conclusion The implantation procedure and the SPG stimulation, initiated within 24hr from stroke onset, are feasible, safe, and tolerable. The results call for a follow-up randomized trial (funded by BrainsGate; clinicaltrials.gov number, NCT03733236).

Food production, processing and preservation have all advanced significantly over the years. Despite this, the safety and quality of food have been questioned in the aftermath of a long series of food frauds and food safety crises. Adding to the existing complexities related to food safety management and food fraud mitigation, calls for a stronger focus on sustainability have gradually increased in response to the negative effects of climate change and system shocks such as the COVID pandemic. These calls are exacerbated by claims of excessive water consumption for food animals and crops as well as toxic discharges. To meet the expectations of an expanding global population, there is an urgent need to leverage new technologies and embrace digital transformation in order to improve sustainability across the food industry. In this context, smart logistics emerges as an innovative paradigm for integrating novel technologies and realising the potential of cyber-physical systems to improve food logistics operations. Additionally, smart logistics has the potential to improve food chain transparency and ensure timely delivery of perishable food while increasing flexibility and improving efficiency. This chapter discusses emerging technologies that serve as a foundation for smart logistics and are critical enablers for the development of a sustainable food industry. It is primarily focused on a variety of food logistics operations, including warehousing, transportation, and distribution. Technological advancements such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics (BDA), Blockchain Technology (BT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are discussed.
