Model observability is essential for the design of state estimators and observers, since the state vector can only be fully reconstructed from the measurements, if the model is observable. However, some research articles do not perform observability analysis and use unobservable models, while the presented results show adequate estimation performance. This paper deals with the impact of observability on the position sensorless state estimation of nonsalient-pole permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM). To show how the observability depends on the chosen coordinate system, observability studies are presented for two widely used nonlinear state-space models given in either the stator or the rotor reference frame. For the stationary reference frame model, a necessary and sufficient observability condition is defined, and it is shown that the model using rotor-oriented variables is unobservable. To point out the limitations of using the unobservable model, comparative simulations are carried out between extended Kalman filters using the models presented.

Quantifying the Effectiveness of Project-Based Editing Operations in Virtual Reality

With the rapid evolution of virtual reality solutions as general-purpose computing platforms, the ability of users to integrate their complete digital life into 3D spaces is becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we focus on ways to manipulate arrangements - or layouts - of 2D content in 3D spaces. We compare three different approaches to layout creation based on variations and combinations of previously proposed solutions. Through controlled experiments, we show that users can create content layouts with high accuracy and significantly less time if they can re-use already existing content layouts. These results support the idea that the effectiveness of virtual reality platforms as universal computing platforms can be improved by incorporating a 3D file system in which spatial dashboard layouts emerge as a central organizing concept.

Minimal Volume Simplex (MVS) Polytopic Model Generation and Manipulation Methodology for TP Model Transformation

The vertices of a polytopic LPV/qLPV model determine the feasibility of any linear matrix inequality (LMI) based control design as well as the achievable control performance, since the polytope typically includes not only the actual system dynamics. This paper proposes a powerful method to determine suitable polytopic qLPV Tensor-Product model forms that allows for fine tuning through constraints on the locations of the vertices. The paper shows that these tuning methods are capable of effectively influencing the closed-loop control performance results from LMI-based multi-objective optimisation. The advantages of the proposed methods are their tractability, low computational complexity, as well as their determinism. The key idea behind the proposed methods is to determine vertices in each decoupled parameter-dimensions of the TP model in such a way that they form a minimal volume enclosing simplex fulfilling further fine tuning conditions on its shape. This is achieved based on the extension of the Minimal Volume Simplex Analysis (MVSA) method, where the volume of the enclosing simplex polytope is minimized by applying Sequential Quadratic Programming with majorization minimization strategy extended with a set of additional constraints influencing the location of certain vertices according to physically established considerations. Besides the comprehensive presentation of the proposed design methodology an expressive numerical example is provided to demonstrate its effectiveness and usability.

Cybervetting is an evolving phenomenon and has witnessed a significant surge in its application across industrial sectors. It can be regarded as the practice of scrutinizing the database of the digital footprints of job candidates found on the Internet and social media platforms for drawing inferences about the eligibility of a prospective employee. The deliberations and debates in the news articles and media platforms are a rich source of data that represent the real time views and thoughts of experts and public on a particular theme. The study intends to identify the various dimensions of the use of cybervetting by recruiters and job seekers, the two most important stakeholders in the talent acquisition space. Also, the study identifies the important motivators for the use of this practice, the pertinent concerns, and suitable remedies for resolving them. The findings of the study offer valuable insights and evidence for cybervetting from the perspective of a recruiter and the job aspirant, in comprehending the complexities and intricacies of the digital identities.

Migration of highly skilled workers as a driver of digital economy development

The migration of highly skilled workers and its impact on productivity, competitiveness, and innovative development is becoming an increasingly relevant area of scientific research in the context of rapid digitalization of the economy. In this regard, the article aims to explore the relationship between the migration of highly skilled workers and digital economy development (using the example of EU countries). The study was conducted using correlation analysis and parametric data analysis methods, based on EU countries’ statistics on the migration of highly skilled workers, macroeconomic digitalization indicators, and the adoption of digital technologies at the business level. The results confirm that highly skilled migrants positively affect aggregate indicators of economic digitalization: correlation coefficients with the Global Digitalization Index and the DiGiX Digital Index are 0.735 and 0.692, respectively, and are statistically significant. At the company level, a significant influence of highly skilled migrants on the use of specific digital technologies in EU companies was confirmed. In particular, there is a strong correlation between the “Foreign Highly Skilled Personnel” indicator from the IMD World Talent Ranking 2024 and digital intensity indicators (level of application of key business-related digital technologies), as well as business activity in using big data analytics technologies: the correlation coefficients are 0.770 and 0.689, respectively, and are statistically significant. The proposed approach to analyzing the relationship between highly skilled worker migration and the digital development outcomes of companies and host countries can be used to develop and adjust knowledge and human resource productivity management strategies at both the micro- and macroeconomic levels.

Due to the rise of e-mobility applications, there is an increased demand to create more accurate control methods, which can reduce the loss in an e-drive system. The accurate modeling of the rotating machines needs to resolve a partial differential equation system that describes the thermal and mechanical behavior of the different parts in addition to the electromagnetic design. Due to these models’ limited resources and high computation demand, they cannot be used directly for real-time control. Model order reduction methods have been of growing interest in the past decades and offer solutions for this problem. According to the processed literature, many model order reduction-based methods are used for a wide range of problems. However, a paper has not been published that discusses a model order reduction-based real-time control model that is actually used in the industry. This paper aims to summarize and systematically review the model order reduction methods developed for rotating electrical machines in the last two decades and examine the possible usage of these methods for a real-time control problem.

The construction and maintenance of a railway track is an expensive process. Therefore, nowadays, except for advanced countries, considerable attention must be paid to apply the optimal maintenance of railway lines. In Hungary, until 2020 nearly 11% of railway tracks were renewed and rehabilitated from EU support, which means millions of Euros, i.e. billions of Hungarian Forints. It also follows from the support that planned preventive maintenance works must be performed on the renewed and rehabilitated lines. On the other hand, it takes away significant costs from the non-renewed (non-rehabilitated) lines maintenance works, but naturally, less money does not mean less failures, so cost-effective technologies are needed. A segment of maintenance is the local substructure problem(s). In this article, this segment will be mentioned from the development of the failures, through the applied technologies, to the possible new solutions like injection and the using of geosynthetic cementitious composite mats (so called GCCMs).

Constructability-based design approach for steel structures: From truss beams to real-world inspired industrial buildings

This paper presents an optimization framework for steel trusses. The authors implemented a penalty-based approach to optimise the size, shape, and topology based on a dynamic grouping strategy to address the constructability challenges. The main contribution of the paper is the use of damped exponential constructability penalties. This approach ensures optimal designs by balancing structural complexity, through standardization in design, and minimizing the total number of members and variety of sections, with the overall structural cost. The paper also presents a detailed analysis that underscores the sensitivity of the optimization convergence to the algorithmic hyperparameters, emphasizing the role of cross-section assignments and stabilization of truss piece counts. The optimization framework is validated on a trussed roof structure based on the findings from the single truss optimization. The best truss topology proved to be the Howe truss configuration, highlighting its efficiency in meeting the defined objective function.

Wavelet based fuzzy rule bases in pre-qualification of access networks' wire pairs

Even though the penetration of the fibre optical cables into telecommunication access networks seems to be accelerated, most of the customers are connected to the central office or to the telecommunication nodes by the copper wire pairs of the old telephone network. Until the replacement of the lines, their needs for modern high speed data communications services can be fulfilled by these symmetrical wire pairs. Equipment manufacturers produce equipments of the latest technologies for these networks (e.g. VDSL2), however pre-qualification of wire pairs of access networks is also essential, as the estimation of the performance gives the possibility to optimize the offered ensemble of services for telecommunications service providers. Our previous performance evaluation method based on fuzzy rule bases at discrete values of the insertion loss at 6 characteristic frequencies is improved by wavelet analysis. We have also proved, that the fine structure of the insertion loss spectrum does not play role in the achievable data transfer rate of the lines.
