Honoring the building's sacred past using traditional materials (whitewash, terracotta) while introducing a massive three-flight ramp as the main inter-vention. This ramp dramatically extends the exhibition path, creating a new in-ternal landscape that contrasts with the dark-toned rear addition, showcasing a modern connection to place.

An open architecture patient monitoring system using standard technologies

Computer-aided bedside patient monitoring is applied in areas where real-time vital function analysis takes place. Modern bedside monitoring requires not only the networking of bedside monitors with a central monitor but also other standard communication interfaces. In this paper, a novel approach to patient monitoring is introduced. A patient monitoring system was developed and implemented based on an existing industry standard communication network, using standard hardware components and software technologies. The open architecture system design offers scalability, standard interfaces, and flexible signal interpretation possibilities.

Ecological footprint as an indicator of corporate environmental performance—empirical evidence from hungarian smes

Small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in the national economies of the EU member states. This economic activity has an inevitable environmental impact; however, environmental performance indicators are mostly measured at larger companies. Since the ecological footprint (EF) is a suitable measure of unsustainability, this paper considers it as a measure of the environmental impact of SMEs. An EF calculator for SMEs was developed that is freely available online, and it is a methodological innovation per se. Our previous research projects highlighted that the calculator must be easy‐to‐use and reliable; therefore, the calculator considers only the common, standardizable, and comparable elements of EF. Our results are based on validated ecological footprint data of 73 Hungarian SMEs surveyed by an online ecological footprint calculator. In order to validate and test the usefulness of the calculator, interviews were conducted with respondents, and results were also checked. The paper presents benchmark data of ecological footprint indicators of SMEs obtained from five groups of enterprises (construction, white‐collar jobs, production, retail and/or wholesale trade, and transportation). Statistical results are explained with qualitative data (such as environmental protection initiatives, business models, etc.) of the SMEs surveyed. Our findings could be used as a benchmark for the assessment of environmental performance of SMEs in Central‐ and Eastern Europe.

Review of the effect of sand on the behavior of expansive clayey soils

Clayey soils often showed undesirable engineering behavior such as low bearing capacity, swelling and shrinkage characteristics. However, chemical improvement, thermal improvement and improvement by additives like lime, cement and sand offer an efficient technique to overcome the problems resulting from Expansive soils. This paper presents a review of the swelling behavior of sand-clay mixtures as well as the effect of sand on the physical and mechanical characteristics of expansive soils. Results highlight the importance of sand in improving the behavior of expansive soils. Finally, the most important general conclusions about the behavior of expansive soils and suggestions for future researches are highlighted.

This paper focuses on the use of modeling and simulation for the renewable energy. An energy storage system for improving performance of electric vehicles is presented. The supercapacitor contributes to the rapid energy recovery associated with regenerative braking in electric vehicles. This power system allows the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle with minimal loss of energy. Short-distance passenger traffic on electrified lines is a domain where brake energy recuperation might reduce the total energy consumption significantly. In this paper the results of a simulation model by Matlab for an urban-metro railcar is presented.

Assessment of combined high-speed passenger and freight train movement to mitigate environmental impact

The purpose of the study is to investigate the primary reasons for the feasibility of the combined movement of high-speed passenger and freight trains. The research includes the analysis and theoretical synthesis of materials related to the combined movement of high-speed passenger and freight trains in European Union countries. The combination of different train categories on high-speed rail lines is not only possible but also, under certain conditions, advisable. The main reasons for arranging sections of combined passenger and freight movement include overcoming contour or height obstacles and justifying investments in the construction of high-speed railways where the demand for passenger transportation is insufficient and profitability is ensured through additional income from cargo transportation. The combined movement of high-speed passenger and freight trains can reduce environmental impact by ensuring the efficient use of railway infrastructure and decreasing transport emissions. The authors have proposed a comprehensive approach to assessing the effectiveness of implementing the movement of high-speed passenger and accelerated freight trains, considering the net present value and ensuring the capacity of the double-track railway line during concurrent train movements. The research results enable enhancing the stability of railway transportation on high-speed railways.

Scientific discussions concerning local governments are pervaded by paradigms at all times, which are questioned from time to time (paradigm crisis). As a result, participants of these discussions either defend their points, or a new paradigm appears (change in paradigm). I examine the system of local governments from this aspect. What kind of and how many paradigms characterise the system of local governments? Are these explainable by the paradigm? If not, is there another explanation? In this study, I gather all the current and emerging (perhaps former) characteristics of the local government system. In that regard, I determined the principles that, in my opinion, either apply at the level of the local government system, or they are in crisis.

Waste marble dust-filled sustainable polymer composite selection using a multi-criteria decision-making technique

This research works with the optimal design of marble dust-filled polymer composites using a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique. Polylactic acid (PLA) and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET)-based composites containing 0, 5, 10, and 20 wt% of marble dust were developed and evaluated for various physicomechanical and wear properties. The results showed that the incorporation of marble dust improved the modulus and hardness of both PLA and rPET. Moreover, a marginal improvement in flexural strength was noted while the tensile and impact strength of the matrices were deteriorating due to marble dust addition. The outcomes of wear analysis demonstrated an improvement in wear resistance up until 10 wt% filler reinforcement, after which the incidence of dust particles peeling off from the matrix was observed, thereby reducing its efficiency. The best tensile modulus of 3.23 GPa, flexural modulus of 4.39 GPa, and hardness of 83.95 Shore D were obtained for 20 wt% marble dust-filled PLA composites. The lowest density of 1.24 g/cc and the highest tensile strength of 57.94 MPa were recorded for neat PLA, while the highest impact strength of 30.94 kJ/m2 was recorded for neat rPET. The lowest wear of 0.01 g was obtained for the rPET containing 5 wt% marble dust content. The experimental results revealed that for the examined criteria, the order of composite preference is not the same. Therefore, the optimal composite was identified by adopting a preference selection index-based MCDM technique. The findings demonstrated that the 10 wt% marble dust-filled PLA composite appears to be the best solution with favorable physical, mechanical, and wear properties.
