Anti-inflammatory activity of melampyrum barbatum and isolation of iridoid and flavonoid compounds

Description:

Melampyrum barbatum Waldst. & Kit. Ex Willd. (Scrophulariaceae) has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of rheumatic complaints and different skin diseases. In the course of our study the anti-inflammatory activity of the aerial parts of M. Barbatum was evaluated. A MeOH extract was prepared and consecutively partitioned with CHCl3, EtOAc and n-BuOH. The fractions were assayed in in vivo carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema model. The intraperitoneally administered n-BuOH phase exerted marked inhibitory effect (33.6 %, p < 0.01). Multistep chromatographic separation afforded mussaenoside and aucubine from n-BuOH fraction. Moreover, 8-epiloganin, loganic acid and mussaenoside were obtained from EtOAc fraction and apigenin, luteolin, benzoic acid and galactitol from CHCl3 fraction. These data validate the ethnomedicinal use of M. Barbatum for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and reveal that iridoids and flavonoids could be responsible for the anti-inflammatory effect of this species.

Contribution to the taxonomy of the West-African Rotundabaloghiidae (Acari: Uropodina)

Description:

The second representative of the family Rotundabaloghiidae (Rotundabaloghia (Cir-cobaloghia) togoensis n. sp.) of Togo is discovered and described. It differs from the congeners based on the pilose v6, v7 and v8 setae, the apically peaked female genital shield, oval pits on dorsal and ventral idiosoma and the R-shaped peritremes. The list and an identification key to the West African rotundabaloghid mites is presented.

A rapid and efficient DNA isolation method for qPCR-based detection of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria in milk

Description:

The objective of this study was to find an efficient, rapid, simple, and cost-effective method of pretreating raw milk samples to produce PCR-ready DNA for subsequent microbial detection using the strains of eight bacterial species. A total of 17 in-house protocols and three commercial kits were evaluated in three steps from scientific, practical, and economic perspectives. The results showed that an in-house procedure involving Triton X-100-based pretreatment and an inhibitor removal resin was superior to all other methods tested in terms of DNA yield, sensitivity, ease of sample handling, time efficiency, and cost per sample. Overall, this simplified preanalytical protocol was shown to have a great potential for use in rapid detection of dairy-related bacterial species, thereby enabling early intervention in the food chain and thus reducing the risk of negative economic and health outcomes.

Description:

From LIDAR pointclouds traffic lanes, racetracks, parking lanes can be extracted with clustering algorithms. However, standard clustering algorithms like DBSCAN, K-means, and BIRCH may exhibit limited robustness in recognizing these specific geometric patterns. The current paper proposes a modification of the well-known DBSCAN algorithm which is designed for autonomous vehicle lane detection. The main idea of the proposed work is to add extra steps into the classic DBSCAN algorithm, thus regulate the cluster expansion. This modification introduces some challenges too, their subsequent resolution will be addressed in detail. To reproduce our work, both the dataset and the accompanying source code in python is shared publicly.

Review of geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported (GRPS) embankments-parametric study and design methods

Embankment construction on soft soil may result in excessive settlement, loss of bearing capacity, or sliding instability. However, geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported (GRPS) embankments offer an effective technique to overcome the problems resulting from soft foundations soils. This paper presents a review of the most important parameters affecting the behaviour of GRPS embankments as well as design methods that estimate tensile forces in the geosynthetic layers and load efficiency. Results highlight the importance of using GRPS embankments, but also reveal the inconsistencies between design methods. Finally, general conclusions about the design and construction of GRPS systems are presented.

Article a new approach in determining the decadal common trends in the groundwater table of the watershed of lake “neusiedlersee”

Shallow groundwater is one of the primary sources of fresh water, providing river baseflow and root-zone soil water between precipitation events. However, with urbanization and the increase in demand for water for irrigation, shallow groundwater bodies are being endangered. In the present study, 101 hydrographs of shallow groundwater monitoring wells from the watershed of the westernmost brackish lake in Europe were examined for the years 1997–2012 using a combination of dynamic factor and cluster analyses. The aims were (i) the determination of the main driving factors of the water table, (ii) the determination of the spatial distribution and importance of these factors, and (iii) the estimation of shallow groundwater levels using the obtained model. Results indicate that the dynamic factor models were capable of accurately estimating the hydrographs (avg. mean squared error = 0.29 for standardized water levels), meaning that the two driving factors identified (evapotranspiration and precipitation) describe most of the variances of the fluctuations in water level. Both meteorological parameters correlated with an obtained dynamic factor (r = −0.41 for evapotranspiration & r = 0.76 for precipitation). The strength of these effects displayed a spatial pattern, as did the factor loadings. On this basis, the monitoring wells could be objectively distinguished into two groups using hierarchical cluster analysis and verified by linear discriminant analysis in 98% of the cases. This grouping in turn was determined to be primarily related to the elevation and the geology of the area. It can be concluded that the application of the data analysis toolset suggested herein permits a more efficient, objective, and reproducible delineation of the primary driving factors of the shallow groundwater table in the area. Additionally, it represents an effective toolset for the forecasting of water table variations, a quality which, in the view of the likelihood of further climate change to come, is a distinctive advantage. The knowledge of these factors is crucial to a better understanding of the hydrogeological processes that characterize the water table and, thus, to developing a proper water resource management strategy for the area.

Noise assisted high performance linear inductive distance sensor

Description:

A temperature compensated linear inductive distance sensor assisted by added noise is demonstrated. The mixed signal processing algorithm performs an effective interpolation over a low-resolution two-dimensional calibration table addressed directly by the digitized noise-affected signals of distance and temperature sensing modules without further arithmetic operations. The table entries are directly passed to the output digital-to-analog converter. The output noise will be cancelled by the intrinsic low-pass behavior of the power output stage. The operation distance, the linearity parameters, as well as the performance of the sensor exceed the standard of the respective industrial products.
