The role of forestry sciences in combating climate change and advancing sustainable development goals

Introduction: As ecological disasters loom, forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study aims to systematically examine the contribution of forestry science research to the SDGs through a multidisciplinary perspective, highlighting its role in advancing global sustainability efforts. Methods: Utilizing the PRISMA protocol, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of 39,841 publications since 2015, focusing on the intersection of forestry sciences with the SDGs. Network and keyword co-occurrence analyses were performed to identify thematic clusters and interdisciplinary linkages among SDGs. Results: Our findings indicate a significant focus on SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), emphasizing the forestry sector’s contributions to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and ecosystem services. The analyses revealed thematic clusters centered around ecological sustainability, sustainable energy, and social development, demonstrating the diverse ways in which forestry research supports the SDGs. Discussion: This study highlights the interdisciplinary nature of forestry sciences and identifies key areas of contribution while pointing to potential research gaps. Future research should explore advanced technologies such as AI-driven analytics and remote sensing, socioeconomic impacts of forest-based livelihoods, and innovative reforestation techniques. Strengthening urban forestry, enhancing interdisciplinary cooperation, and improving governance are recommended to ensure continued contributions of forestry sciences to global sustainability and the SDGs.

The Ecological Footprint of Embedded Rail Structures

Since the 1990s, tramway transport in East-Central Europe has been experiencing a renaissance. In urban planning practice, there has been a growing trend towards the displacement of individual motorized transportation, thereby reducing traffic congestion and air pollution, creating the foundations of a healthier, more liveable urban environment. In the major cities, large-scale investments have recently been carried out or are being planned. Most of the investments focused the modernization and renovation of existing line sections, but there are also examples of new lines being built. Due to the increasing demands placed on rail transport (reduction of noise and vibration loads, as well as of life cycle costs), the use of embedded superstructures is gaining ground in Poland as well. These superstructures are excellent from a technical point of view and have a lower environmental impact in terms of noise and vibration, but the cost savings and ecological footprint reductions vary between designs. Our research proposes a standardized approach to measure environmental impacts of urban railway projects using ecological footprint (EF) calculation. As a result of our previous studies, we found that the ecological footprint of a design built with B3 rails is significantly smaller than that of a design built with 59Ri2 rails. In our current study, we have investigated how the ecological footprint of the design with the more favourable ecological footprint changes when it is modified to meet the environmental considerations. We examined the additional environmental impact of reducing noise and vibration. In our research we present an example from Krakow to illustrate the practical application.

VARIANCE AND DEVIATIONS IN THE BUDGETS OF REGIONAL ENTERPRISES AS AN ELEMENT OF RISK MEASUREMENT IN THE PROBABILISTIC MODEL

The aim of this article is to develop models that can measure probabilistic budget volatility risk in a manner that is not dependent on the type of cost or financing unit. Budgets are essential tools in facilitating the management process of any organization, while budget control helps optimize resource allocation and enhance operational efficiency. Using the methodology of budget deviation analysis can significantly improve the management of organizational units. However, the authors identify a research gap in terms of both methodology and application when it comes to analyzing the risk of budget variances. To address this, the authors develop models based on the theory of extreme values. The models can determine the deviation level for a specific probability level and estimate the limit level of deviation for assumed probabilities. These models can be used to holistically evaluate the level of budget implementation in the enterprise, compare the quality of budget implementation overtime and across units, and identify materiality limits of budget variances. To validate the models, empirical data from the budget control system of a major European city university was used. Empirical distributions obtained from the data were used to determine budget variances that indicate the level of deviation for a given probability level.

Digital innovation in family businesses in the post-pandemic period: A case study

Businesses must develop appropriate organizational structures and working models to reduce costs and increase profitability. Under the conditions of rapid change, innovation and creativity are critical for business success. Traditional hierarchical and rigid organizational structures are unsuitable for the flexible working conditions of the post-pandemic period and need to be revised to adapt to newly created requirements. This study aims to answer the fundamental question of the importance of digital innovation for businesses in the postpandemic period. A qualitative research method was the basis for this case study. Data were collected from 15 family business managers operating in Sakarya (Turkey) through semi-structured interviews. The collected data were analyzed using the qualitative content analysis technique in the MAXQDA program. According to research findings, developing new organizational structures and business models based on digital innovation is necessary to ensure sustainability and cope with uncertainty in family businesses. This also supports the notion that organizational structures should adhere to organic and flexible arrangements and move away from rigid and mechanical systems.

Exploring the Spatial Distribution and Location Choice of Companies in a Hungarian Agglomeration

Globalisation has led to the dominance and geographical expansion of urban areas. Companies consider a com-plex set of criteria when deciding on their locations, including the agglomeration area and the presence of similar companies or related businesses. This study examines the spatial distribution and industrial clustering of companies within the agglomeration of Győr, Hungary’s sixth-largest city. The sample comprises 256 companies across 68 settlements, with data processed through map, quadrat and industry analysis. The analyses identified six settlements within the agglomeration where nearly half of the companies are located, five factors that seem to facilitate company location, and five main industrial sectors, four of which are closely related. The article concludes that the agglomeration area of Győr is characterised by a high degree of spatial concentration of companies, industrial clustering and the emergence of industry sub-centres.

Design and Evaluation of Abstract Aggregated Avatars in VR Workspaces

Avatars are commonly used in digital platforms to provide a visual representation of individual users to each other. Generally, avatar design in the past has focused on achieving visual fidelity and realism of social interactions. In this paper, we broaden the concept of avatars to incorporate displays using an abstract visual language and conveying information on aggregated, interpersonal information from the perspective of the digital platform as a whole. We propose a general design methodology for such aggregated avatars, and also introduce and experimentally evaluate an aggregated avatar which we have developed on the MaxWhere VR platform. Results are promising in that users were able to discern several key states of the avatar and correctly associate them with the correct virtual reality scenarios in a statistically meaningful way.

Calculation of Thermal Stresses of Cast Iron Tubbings Under Fire Effect

This article builds on our existing knowledge of the heating of cast iron tunnel linings and deals with the structural analysis of tunnel linings under fire exposure. Due to space constraints, we do not address the issue of sizing for earth pressure and surface loads. Since the analysis of thermal stresses due to restrained deformations is insufficient in the available literature, we will try to complement the existing theoretical knowledge with the knowledge provided by the relevant standards for cast iron lining of tunnels. In addition, we will try to add our own individual reflections to the theory where we have identified gaps. The theoretical summary is compiled in such a way that it is easily transferable and applicable to everyday practice. Our finite element analysis shows that the value of the embedding factor has a small effect on the development of the axial constraint stresses in the tunnel direction, while in the ring direction has a significant effect. In all cases, stiffer embedding results in higher stress values. In all cases, the ring direction compressive stresses are lower than the longitudinal stresses due to the deformation of the tunnel ring. There is no literature data available on the value of the compressive stresses, so we have tried to provide some indicative data in tabular form for the profession. The solution adopted and the values proposed are based on the authors' individual ideas and are not the result of an accepted professional consensus. In all cases where more precise data are required, it is recommended that a more detailed study be carried out. Finite element modelling can provide the necessary support for designers and experts.

Ukrainian students on the global map of academic migration

Considering the loss of talented youth in Ukraine caused by migration, there is a growing need to investigate how to attract and retain students. The study aims to identify the peculiarities of Ukrainian student migration against the background of global patterns of academic migration, focusing on factors of countries' attractiveness for the students. The typology of countries by the level of inbound and outbound academic migration is developed based on variation analysis. The correlation analysis is used to identify the factors that influence countries' attractiveness to students. The analysis of educational policies of the most attractive countries for Ukrainian students is fulfilled using the contextual analysis of legislative norms on academic mobility. In the global dimension, the variation of both inbound and outbound academic mobility is closely related to a country's economic level, measured by GNI per capita. However, the correlation analysis did not confirm the higher migration attractiveness of countries with a high level of economic development (correlation with GNI per capita is -0.147). The impact of employment and social and economic resilience of an economy was relatively significant, with the correlation coefficients of 0.426 and 0.371. The analysis of educational policies of host countries showed the active use of language integration tools, the combined use of financial mechanisms, and the involvement of universities in career development. Implementation of the best practices of educational management in Ukraine is critical for restoring demographic and intellectual capital.

The Role of Leisure Satisfaction on Students' Engagement, among Higher Education Institutes during the COVID-19 Pandemic

This study was conducted in Pakistan during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examines the role of leisure satisfaction on student engagement, during the period of COVID-19 in higher education institutes. The purpose of the study is to examine the impact of COVID-19 on students' leisure, emotional, cognitive and behavioral engagement. This study is based on three scales: the Leisure satisfaction scale, the student engagement scale and the fear of COVID-19 pandemic scale. This is a quantitative study based on a questionnaire. The results have been drawn over SmartPLS version 4.0. Covid-19 harms Leisure satisfaction, and it also harms the emotional engagement of students. Leisure satisfaction has a positive impact on student engagement, but it has a weak negative relationship with fear of Covid-19. The fear of the COVID-19 pandemic, negatively impacts the students' leisure satisfaction and leads to increased anxiety and depression.
