Investigation of deformations of ballasted railway track during collapse using the Digital Image Correlation Method (DICM)

Publication Name: Reports in Mechanical Engineering

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 3

Issue: 1

Page Range: 168-191

Description:

This paper summarizes the results of laboratory tests in which the authors investigated the effects of extremely high vertical load to a railway track segment. The segment consisted of a cut concrete sleeper (contact area: 290×390 mm) with a pair of direct-elastic rail fasteners; the sleeper pieces had a standard, full height; the structure had a typical 350 mm depth railway ballast, underneath approx. 200 mm sandy gravel supplementary layer. The whole assembly was built in a 2.00×2.20 m area wooden rack. The deformations due to the approx. 150 kN static concentrated vertical force were measured and recorded by Digital Image Correlation Method (DICM), ensuring the GOM ATOS technology. The 150 kN peak load meant 1326 kPa vertical stress at the sleeper-ballast interface. The 3D geometry was scanned before the loading and after the collapse. In this way, the comparison was able to be executed. The maximum vertical deformation was 115 mm. The DICM technique is a relatively new methodology in civil engineering; however, it has been applied for more than ten years in mechanical engineering. Therefore, the authors investigated the applicability of DICM in this field. As a result, the pre and the post-states were determined in 3D. The displacement of the ballast particles was able to be defined with the possibility of drawing the displacement trajectories of given points. The DICM can be a valuable methodology in railway engineering, e.g., laboratory tests and field test applications.

Corporate Reporting of CO2 Emission Disclosures in Electric Vehicle Manufacturing: an Overview of Tesla Inc.

Publication Name: Chemical Engineering Transactions

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 94

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 391-396

Description:

Electric vehicles have been gaining ground over the past decade, with sales reaching 3 M units worldwide by 2020. From an environmental point of view, this type of propulsion has advantages in terms of lower emissions, which contributes to the growth in demand. In the present research, using content analysis of corporate reports, we have examined the CO2 emissions data of Tesla Inc., which has recently experienced heavy growth in the electric vehicle market. The research question is particularly relevant due to the increasing emphasis in the international regulatory environment on the obligation to disclose corporate sustainability information in a relevant and clear manner. Tesla's position, given its geographically extensive manufacturing network, is questionable in the application of public standards, guidelines, and measurement methods. Based on findings, Tesla’s disclosures do not fully comply with the proposed requirements of International Sustainability Standards. Among research results, the emissions-focused disclosures connected to vehicle production and sales volume were examined. Model 3 production between 2017-2021 has significantly increased from 2,7 k to 906 k vehicles globally, which puts a measurable impact on well-to-wheel CO2 emissions, influenced by the location of use and type of charging system. The disclosure gaps were addressed by examining the actual emissions performance from the open data source available to stakeholders as a contribution to the development of a future assessment system for digital reporting and accountability.

A novel focus logic infused metaheuristic optimization approach based on swarm movement and human eye behavior

Publication Name: 2022 IEEE 1st International Conference on Internet of Digital Reality Iod 2022

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 93-98

Description:

A novel global optimization method is described in this paper. The proposed metaheuristic approach is loosely based on the previously published technique, the Weighted Attraction Method. The main idea behind the proposed algorithm is the combination the local searching capabilities of the swarm movement-based metaheuristics and quasi-random global search. The quasi-random search technique applied is a novel concept, described as focus logic. The explosion step of the Weighted Attraction Method is modified in a way, that allows a wider area search preventing the algorithm to stuck at a local minimum point for multiple optimization cycles. The behavior of the proposed approach is similar, as the human eye observes its environment. It focuses on a specific area, while the peripheral vision is still giving information about the surrounding area. The proposed method can be applied to solve problems described by a continuous, moderately smooth objective functions rapidly. An objective function with such parameters can be found in any research field, from antenna design through model parameter identifications to Internet of Digital Reality (IoD) applications. In the first chapter the paper introduces the reader to the field of metaheuristic optimizations. The second chapter presents the detailed algorithmic structure of the proposed approach and describes the parameters that could be used to fine tune the behavior of the optimization process. The last technical chapter shows the performance of the proposed technique through comparing the convergence progress of multiple optimization methods on various test functions.

Testing and Modeling Procedure of the 18650 Lithium Battery at Different Temperatures

Publication Name: 2022 22nd International Symposium on Electrical Apparatus and Technologies Siela 2022 Proceedings

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

In this paper a two-time constant (TTC) electrical model is investigated to simulate the operation of 18650 batteries at different temperatures. To determine the parameters of the model, a new test procedure is developed, which can be used to obtain a wide range of information on the behavior of the tested batteries after 10 measurements. After performing the tests, detailed information on the constant, transient, and dynamic behavior of the battery over a wide temperature range is available. After, a statistics-based Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) aggregation operator is applied to evaluate the results. The general model is developed based on standardized parameters. Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) tests are performed to validate the simulation results. The operation of the model has been tested at 4 different temperatures: -15 °C, 0 °C, 25 °C, 60 °C. The simulation results are compared and evaluated with real measurement data.

Investigation of the Track Gauge in Straight Sections, Considering Hungarian Railway Lines

Publication Name: Acta Polytechnica Hungarica

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 19

Issue: 3

Page Range: 155-166

Description:

In this work, considering the MÁV’s (i.e., the Hungarian Railways) five small and five high-traffic railway lines, the statistical distribution and change of the track gauge parameter were analyzed, under a ten year, on time-series analysis, related to straight track sections. The analysed data, were bottom track gauge measurements, of the FMK-004 and FMK-007 type railway track geometry, measuring and recording car & wagon. Taking into account the railway tracks, the track gauge parameter cannot be controlled and improved upon by large machine methods, but its permitted value depends on the allowed speed (and vice versa). The main independent variables were the elapsed time and the through-rolled axle tons (as a function of time, i.e., the MGT). To generate the statistical analyses, Vaszary-like shape numbers were computed, considering the distribution functions of the measured data series of the track gauge parameter every 25 cm. The authors examined the change of the shape numbers, the average and standard deviation values of the track gauge, and the shape of the distribution functions (skewness and kurtosis properties). In the end, a spectrum analysis of the measured data series was produced. In conclusion, the Authors provide relevant statements regarding the track gauge parameter.

Determination of critical deformation regions of a lithium polymer battery by dic measurement and wowa filter

Publication Name: Acta Polytechnica Hungarica

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 19

Issue: 2

Page Range: 113-134

Description:

This paper considers the determination method of deformation location of lithium polymer batteries. Measurements are performed using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique and the obtained results are sorted into a database as a function of the charge level. A statistically based algorithm is used to eliminate measurement errors and outliers. This paper adopts the Weighted Ordered Weighted Averaging (WOWA) operator-based 2D filtering method with the purpose of determining the critical regions of the cell. During the tests, several lithium polymer batteries of the same type but in different states are compared. Measurements on completely new and also on worn-out batteries are performed. The results support that the regions where greater deformation is expected during charging and discharging can be predicted. Results of investigations validate that the proposed approach is suitable for determining the critical deformation regions with high accuracy.

EXAMINING A MENU ON THE BASIS OF THE KASAVANA - SMITH MODEL IN A HUNGARIAN RESTAURANT

Publication Name: Deturope

Publication Date: 2022-01-01

Volume: 14

Issue: 1

Page Range: 111-127

Description:

Gastronomy is currently undergoing a renaissance, different gastronomic trends influence the way menus are set up. The purpose of this study is to investigate the menu of a restaurant in a Transdanubian city in terms of sold portions and margins. After an unstructured interview with the manager, the breadth and depth of the offer were investigated. Then the data were examined, based on the restaurant's menu selection, traffic and cost data with the help of time series analysis. During the processing of time series data, the analysis takes into account seasonality and compares the same terminology of the years studied. With the turnover and cost data, the Kasavana and Smith portfolio analysis method was used and based on the margin and the number of portions sold, the Menu engineering worksheet was used to create the data series for the presentation. The research provides a detailed picture of sales decisions for the period 2016-2019. The results of the examination show that reducing the selection and offering special dishes are in line with the gastronomical trends, but not necessarily with the location of the restaurant and the needs of its target audience. Using the model, seasonality was examined for the first time, which did not prove that restaurant guests were looking for seasonal food. With a well-selected menu – which is one of the most important marketing communication tools - the restaurant is able to influence guests' food choices. Proper use of colours, shapes and prices all affect the guest's subconscious mind, which is responsible for a large percentage of decisions. The character of the restaurant and its guests are usually determined by the dishes on the menu. In the case of the investigated restaurant the solution could be to tailor the prices to the target group and to strengthen the marketing communication. The restaurant — taking advantage of the large space — can be used to serve different target groups by sharing the room
