Illicit practices: Experience of developed countries

The article is devoted to finding the answer to two research questions. What illegal practices are most significant for clusters of developed countries formed by similarities in trends in corruption, shadow economy, money laundering, and crime rates? What social, economic, regulatory, and digital factors most influence them in each group? The pair correlation coefficients for illicit practices indicators confirm the presence of tight and statistically significant relationships in their trends for 36 developed countries. The agglomerative clustering and canonical analysis results identified that tackling the shadow economy is crucial for Estonia, Slovenia, and Lithuania; corruption for Portugal, Hungary, Cyprus, etc.; the shadow sector and crime levels for Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and New Zealand; corruption, money laundering, and crime for Canada, Germany, the USA, etc.; four illegal practices for Italy, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Romania. The canonical analysis revealed that social and regulatory factors influence the trends of illicit practices in developed countries more than economic and digital ones. Network analysis showed their single moderate influence in most cases. Edge evidence probability analysis confirmed a high probability of a relationship between some pairs of social, economic, regulatory, digital and illegal indicators. However, Bayesian network analysis showed a low likelihood of mutual influence of single factors, confirming the importance of the group influence.

The effects of environmental factors on the embryonic and late postembryonic life through epigenetic mechanisms

It has long been known that, in addition to genetic factors, epigenetic effects fundamentally influence the functioning of the living organism. Although the genome of individual cells of the human body is almost identical, the access, transcription and expression of genetic information are influenced by epigenetic effects. The eukaryotic nuclear DNA is wrapped around histone octamers to form the nucleosome, the basic unit of the chromatin structure. The covalent modifications of the histone proteins cause epigenetic changes. Human conception, followed by the division and implantation of the fertilized egg into the maternal decidua, is a complex process that requires the coordinated functioning of embryological, immunological processes and anatomical structures. The steps of these processes are genetically determined and the coarse- and fine-tuning of these effects occurs at the epigenetic level by external effects such as hormones, toxins, changes in diet, infections, or cell differentiation. The most significant rearrangements occur in the embryonic period after the fertilization of the egg. In our paper, we review the literature to present the effects that influence the fine-tuning of genome function at the epigenetic level. Disturbances of these mechanisms are the basis of several pathologies that threaten conception, implantation and successful pregnancy, such as recurrent miscarriage, preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction or premature birth. In addition, epigenetic alterations acting during the period of plasticity of individual development can cause diseases that appear in the young, adult and even old age of the offspring, which can even be inherited through generations.

Systematic Method of Retrofitting Wastewater Transportation Systems for Enhanced Reliability

While the treatment of wastewater is an important issue that received significant attention in the past decades, improving the related technologies is only one part of a more complex task. Domestic wastewater is usually transported via the city's sewer system, and in many places, it is combined with rainwater. This means that disturbances, such as heavy rainfall or failures in the pipeline system, can lead to floods of polluted wastewater. Thus, it is important to design such transportation systems to be reliable. This work presents a methodology for generating several potential extensions to retrofit an existing water transportation network and increase its reliability. Reliability and feasibility evaluation is performed via the P-graph framework, after which the nondominated networks are collected. Results of the presented case study show that reliability can be increased 3 times by adding only some of the possible extensions to the network. The methodology proposed analysed 512 plausible retrofitting alternatives, from which 20 are non-dominated networks. This range of alternatives provides designers with insightful information to decrease water pollution and the vulnerability of wastewater systems.

Contribution to knowledge of the oribatid mite genus Achipterina (Acari, Oribatida, Ceratokalummidae)

Achipterina (Oribatida, Ceratokalummidae) currently comprises four species, collectively distributed in the tropical and subtropical areas. We describe a new species—A. mangrovicasp. nov.—based on adults collected from litter of a mangrove forest in the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve, southern Vietnam. It is the first representative of the family discovered in the Vietnamese fauna. The new species is characterized in having a bidentate rostrum, setiform rostral and lamellar setae, long inner tooth of lamellar cusp, unilaterally fusiform bothridial seta, long interlamellar seta, dentate anterior part of pteromorph, oval and oblique notogastral porose area Aa. The morphology of the gnathosoma, ovipositor, and legs are presented for the first time for Achipterina. Economic and environmental drivers of renewable energy transition in the EU

The current green agenda, the climate change, and sustainability frameworks are closely linked to the successful transition to renewable energy. The study purpose is to estimate the influence of economic and environmental drivers of renewable energy promotion in the EU-27, using the 2013–2021 data for member states. Breusch and Pagan Lagrangian multiplier test and Hausman specification test were performed to determine the proper model specification. Using random-effects GLS regression for selected data, the study found that the rise in the magnitude of the Land-Ocean Temperature Index by one unit contributes to an increase in renewable energy sources by 10-16 percentage points. The rise in natural gas prices in the EU by USD 10 per MMBtu is associated with an average growth of renewable energy sources by 2.1-2.6 percentage points and three percentage points for growth in renewable electricity. An increase in GDP per capita of USD 1,000 led to an average increase in renewable electricity by 0.2 percentage points. An increase in CO2 per capita by one ton is associated with an average decrease in renewable electricity by 0.85 percentage points. This study proves that the critical point of GDP per capita within the “economic growth/renewable energy” nexus when economic stimulus starts to decline was estimated at USD 121,227-148,623. Thus, for countries that have reached the break-even point in GDP per capita, the incentives for introducing renewable energy sources are reduced when the effect of wealth prevails over the impact of environmental awareness and responsibility.

Pregnancy-induced gait alterations: meta-regression evidence of spatiotemporal adjustments

During pregnancy, women undergo significant physiological, hormonal, and biomechanical changes that influence their gait. The forward shift of the center of mass and increased joint loads often result in a “waddling gait,” elevating the risk of falls. While gait changes during pregnancy have been documented, findings across studies remain inconsistent, particularly regarding variations at different pregnancy stages. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantify the impact of pregnancy stages on spatiotemporal gait parameters. A comprehensive literature search across six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO, Embase, and Cochrane Library) was conducted to identify studies on pregnancy and gait, and data on publication details, methodology, participant characteristics, gait outcomes, and study limitations were extracted. Out of 4,581 initial records, 21 studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis revealed significant changes in gait parameters during pregnancy, with decreases in stride length (effect size = −0.29) and gait speed (effect size = −0.55), and increases in stride width (effect size = 0.45), cycle time (effect size = 0.38), and double support time (effect size = 0.41). Meta-regression analyses indicated that gestational weeks significantly impacted stride length (β = −0.03 [95% CI, −0.055 to −0.002], p < 0.05) and stride width (β = 0.02 [95% CI, 0.003 to 0.039], p < 0.05), while no significant effects were found for cycle time, double support time, or gait speed. In conclusion, pregnancy leads to significant changes in gait patterns, with a notable increase in stride width and a decrease in stride length as gestation progresses, suggesting these adjustments are strategies for maintaining balance and stability in response to physiological changes. The analysis also emphasizes that while gestational age influences gait adaptations, other factors such as pelvic girdle pain, footwear, and psychological influences play crucial roles. Understanding these complex gait changes can inform interventions and guidelines to support mobility and safety for pregnant women throughout their pregnancy.

Fuzzy Signature Based Model in Material Handling Management

Scheduling and management of material handling in functional production system are among the biggest challenges of logistics. Among several methods, linear programming gives exact solution to these kinds of problems, however, linear programming is rigid and requires specially trained personnel to operate. Fuzzy logic based systems—besides they work similarly to human thinking—seems to be easily implementable in such problems. In this paper we present a fuzzy signature based approach constructed on expert knowledge. Its results are compared to the results of linear programming in the same situations.

Symptomatology of hypoglycemia in diabetes: A bibliometric analysis (2000-2022) of bayesian approaches

Hypoglycemia poses a critical challenge in managing diabetes. Existing literature, while extensive, lacks a holistic perspective. This study aims to bridge this gap by combining bibliometric analysis and a comprehensive review of Bayesian analysis-related hypoglycemic issues. This study employed data from the SCI-EXPANDED database for bibliometric analysis. The keywords "symptom" or "symptoms," "hypoglycemic" or "hypoglycemia," or "hypoglycaemia" or "hypoglycaemic," and "Diabetes" or "Diabetic" or "Diabetics" were used to locate 1,596 documents from 2000 to 2022. Document types, authorship patterns, and citation metrics were examined. Bayesian methodologies were systematically reviewed across various diabetes types and evaluated using specific assessment tools. Most of the articles published in "Endocrinology & Metabolism" contributed 37.2% of total articles, with a notable CPP2022 (Citations Per Publication (CPP)) of 35, and the main publication type were articles with an average of about six authors and over 32,000 citations in 2022. The United States (US) consistently leads in the number of published articles, followed by China, Japan, and India. Novo Nordisk led institutions with 36 publications and a substantial CPP2022 of 60.9. The comprehensive review emphasized that Bayesian statistical modeling is widely used for adult Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes but is limited in child Type 1 and absent in Gestational Diabetes (GAD) research. In contrast, Bayesian Networks (BNs) are mainly applied to adult Type 2 diabetes, with gaps in other types. Furthermore, Bayesian Neural Networks (BNNs) are prevalent in adult and child Type 1 studies but not applied to Type 2 or GAD. Since 2010, Total Publications (TP) have increased rapidly, indicating increased interest in researching hypoglycemia. Outlining potential research directions and emphasizing the transformative impact of Bayesian methodologies provides valuable insights for clinicians, researchers, and healthcare stakeholders.

VARIANCE AND DEVIATIONS IN THE BUDGETS OF REGIONAL ENTERPRISES AS AN ELEMENT OF RISK MEASUREMENT IN THE PROBABILISTIC MODEL

The aim of this article is to develop models that can measure probabilistic budget volatility risk in a manner that is not dependent on the type of cost or financing unit. Budgets are essential tools in facilitating the management process of any organization, while budget control helps optimize resource allocation and enhance operational efficiency. Using the methodology of budget deviation analysis can significantly improve the management of organizational units. However, the authors identify a research gap in terms of both methodology and application when it comes to analyzing the risk of budget variances. To address this, the authors develop models based on the theory of extreme values. The models can determine the deviation level for a specific probability level and estimate the limit level of deviation for assumed probabilities. These models can be used to holistically evaluate the level of budget implementation in the enterprise, compare the quality of budget implementation overtime and across units, and identify materiality limits of budget variances. To validate the models, empirical data from the budget control system of a major European city university was used. Empirical distributions obtained from the data were used to determine budget variances that indicate the level of deviation for a given probability level.
