Vehicle Dynamics Measurements with a Unique Measuring System for Trams

Publication Name: Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: 1258 LNNS

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 24-33

Description:

One of the paramount challenges in contemporary urban transport is the efficient maintenance and operation of tramway tracks, aiming to maximize their lifespan while ensuring safe and comfortable passenger travel. Traditional methods of examining superstructure systems through observation and geometric measurements are insufficient; understanding the dynamics of vehicles adhering to their schedules is equally critical. To address this, we developed an innovative portable vehicle dynamics measurement system equipped with accelerometers and a GPS module (with GNSS system), facilitating real-time tram dynamics testing. This versatile device can be deployed at any time and on any tram, enabling continuous monitoring of track conditions. The dynamic data gathered can be systematically compared with geometric measurements, providing comprehensive insights into the railway track's condition and informing maintenance strategies. The paper consists of several examples for comparison (geometric and dynamic data series) and discusses how to develop the instrument further.

Replacing Traditional Transmission Models with Artificial Intelligence †

Publication Name: Engineering Proceedings

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: 113

Issue: 1

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

The development of vehicle simulation models is becoming increasingly important, especially for the virtual validation of new automotive features. New methods are emerging that need to be tested and validated to ensure their proper functioning. The use of artificial intelligence methods can accelerate product development processes, so it is essential for companies to examine the applicability of these solutions. This article compares the results of a traditional rule-based transmission model and an artificial intelligence-based transmission model against real vehicle measurements. Creating a transmission model using the new artificial intelligence-based method requires less time and effort than developing a rule-based model. However, experimental data is required to train the model. This paper addresses the challenges of artificial intelligence-based transmission modeling and highlights the new advantages of artificial intelligence-based solutions.

Performance Comparison of the General the Dual and the Joint Extended Kalman Filter on State Estimation of Li-ion Battery Cells for BMS

Publication Name: 2024 IEEE 21st International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference Pemc 2024

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

The aim of the work is to compare the performance of the general Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), the joint EKF and the dual EKF for state and parameter estimation of a Samsung 18650INR13L Li-ion battery cell. The used battery model is based on a simplified Randles equivalent circuit equipped with Rs, Rct and Cdl parameters. The initial values of Randles parameters were identified from constant charge, discharge and transient discharge measurements. The performance of the implemented Kalman Filters were compared for the state and parameter estimation of the cell during WLTP test condition. While the general EKF uses only the identified initial values of the parameters, the joint and dual EKF are able to estimate them to compensate for the drift during the operation which leads to more accurate state estimation and compensates the parameters change due to heat and the aging of the cell. From the SOC estimation performance comparison we found out that both the dual and joint EKF perform similarly well, but the dual EKF has about 22% less computational cost which is very significant in the case of the future implementation on a real Battery Management System (BMS) which was the target of this investigation.

Toward Sustainable 3D Printing: Tensile Mechanical Comparison of PLA/PBAT Biopolymer Blend and TPU in MEX Additive Manufacturing †

Publication Name: Engineering Proceedings

Publication Date: 2025-01-01

Volume: 113

Issue: 1

Page Range: Unknown

Description:

A biopolymer blend of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephtalate) (PBAT) in a 60/40 weight ratio was investigated as a potential green alternative to thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) for material extrusion (MEX)-based additive manufacturing. A comparison of the two materials was conducted based on their tensile mechanical properties, evaluated using 3D-printed specimens fabricated with three distinct infill raster orientations (0°, ±45°, and 90°). The results showed that the tensile strengths of the two materials were relatively similar, ranging from 14.7 to 34.8 MPa, depending on the raster angle. However, the stiffness of PLA/PBAT was considerably higher than that of TPU, as reflected by Young’s modulus values an order of magnitude greater. While the elongation at break was comparable at 0° infill orientation (214% for PLA/PBAT and 265% for TPU), TPU exhibited better tolerance to increasing raster angles, with elongation only decreasing to 134% at 90°. In contrast, PLA/PBAT dropped drastically to 2%.

Strategic Importance of Corporate Communication and Leadership Styles in the Performance of Slovakian SMEs

Publication Name: Journal of Ecohumanism

Publication Date: 2024-11-10

Volume: 3

Issue: 8

Page Range: 8155-8167

Description:

Effective internal communication plays a key role in shaping organisational culture, increasing employee satisfaction and improving performance, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of two-way communication and leadership styles on the employees of Slovakian SMEs, with a particular focus on the challenges posed by the pandemic COVID-19. A mixed methodology was used in the research, which included questionnaire data collection and statistical analysis of the results to explore the frequency and effectiveness of communication and the impact of leadership styles on conflict management. The results highlight that assertive communication and two-way information flow help to increase trust and commitment while having a positive impact on employee motivation and job satisfaction. However, hierarchical communication gaps and inappropriate leadership styles often lead to dissatisfaction and inefficiency. The research has also shown that sustainable development goals, such as incorporating the principles of a circular economy, can contribute to increasing the effectiveness of internal communication and strengthening organisational stability. The new communication challenges brought about by the pandemic, including the consequences of remote working such as feelings of isolation and difficulties in information flow, further reinforce the importance of effective management practices and communication strategies. The paper offers practical suggestions for optimising internal communication systems that can help to increase organisational resilience, improve employee well-being and implement effective leadership practices. The results can contribute to the development of communication strategies and the achievement of organisational success in SMEs.

Benchmark Analysis of Plastic Strain-Based Lifetime Estimation Fatigue Models in Aspect of SMD Component Standoff Height

Publication Name: Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: 59

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 128-134

Description:

Thermomechanical fatigue is one of the most common cause of the failure in microelectronic technology in the solder joints. The lifetime prediction for microelectronic components is a very important area in nowadays automotive industry, because the lifetime estimation fatigue models in the literature differ in their results by orders of magnitude. However, developing an accurate lifetime estimation methodology for microelectronic components is not straightforward, because the failure mechanism of the solder joints under cyclic thermomechanical load is not fully understood. In addition, there are numerous tolerances and uncertainties during the designing and manufacturing processes, such as component size, copper pad area, solder material volume or the formed standoff height of the component from the copper pad. These parameters can hugely affect the lifetime of the solder joint. In this paper a benchmark analysis based on finite element method were carried out with four plastic strain-based fatigue models to understand the impact of the standoff height to the estimated lifetimes. Three CAD models were created with identical parameters, except the standoff height of the components. Creating the solder geometries for the 3D models, Surface Evolver software were used. The result shows that the fatigue models give the same tendencies varying the standoff height values. However, changing the standoff height increases the differences between models, even if they are tuned so that the estimated lifetime matches for a certain standoff height.

A meshless polyharmonic-type boundary interpolation method for solving boundary integral equations

Publication Name: Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements

Publication Date: 2004-01-01

Volume: 28

Issue: 10 SPEC. ISS.

Page Range: 1207-1216

Description:

A boundary interpolation technique is introduced based on multi-elliptic partial differential equations. The interpolation problem is converted to a special higher order partial differential equation which is completely independent of the geometry of the original problem. Based on this interpolation method, meshless methods are constructed for the 2D Laplace-Poisson equation. The presented approach makes it possible to avoid solving large and dense interpolation equations. The auxiliary higher order partial differential equation is solved by robust, quadtree-based multi-level methods. The results can be easily generalized to 3D problems as well. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Information Accessibility and Decision-Making in Career Selection: An Examination of Influential Sources for University Students

Publication Name: International Conference on Higher Education Advances

Publication Date: 2024-01-01

Volume: Unknown

Issue: Unknown

Page Range: 809-816

Description:

The aim of the present study is to analyze the relationship between information accessibility and career decision making among first-year university students from a Central Eastern European university (n=2,330). Hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted based on motivational factors and four distinct student groups were identified: ‘Independent Decision Makers’ (IDM, 15.4%), ‘Amenity-Oriented Selectors’ (AOS, 41.2%), ‘Location-Centric Choosers’ (LCC, 16.6%), and ‘Academic Excellence Seekers’ (AES, 26.8%). While IDMs made decisions independent of institutional attributes, AOS prioritized university services, LCC were influenced by the city, and AES emphasized academic course quality. The most relevant sources of information are the official website of the National Office of Admissions, university websites, peer opinions, and institutional information. These findings provide important insights for universities and their targeted enrollment campaigns to understand the different decision-making preferences of students.
