The primary issues in the Himalayan Rivers are sediment and cavitation degradation of the hydroelectric power turbine components. During the monsoon season, heavy material is transported by streams in hilly areas like the Himalayas through regular rainfalls, glacial and sub-glacial hydrological activity, and other factors. The severe erosion of hydraulic turbines caused by silt abrasion in these areas requires hydropower facilities to be regularly shut down for maintenance, affecting the plant's overall efficiency. This article provides an in-depth examination of the challenges that can lead to cavitation, silt erosion, and a decrease in the efficiency of various hydroelectric turbines, and it demands attention on the design, manufacture, operation, and maintenance of the turbines. This study's main objective is to critically evaluate earlier theoretical, experimental, and numerical evaluation-based studies (on cavitation and silt erosion) that are provided and addressed throughout the study. As a part of this study, various strategies for mitigating the effects of these problems and elongating the time that turbine may be utilized before they must be replaced have been provided.

Futuristic advancements in phytoremediation of endocrine disruptor Bisphenol A: A step towards sustainable pollutant degradation for rehabilitated environment

Bisphenol A (BPA) accumulates in the environment at lethal concentrations because of its high production rate and utilization. BPA, originating from industrial effluent, plastic production, and consumer products, poses serious risks to both the environment and human health. The widespread aggregation of BPA leads to endocrine disruption, reactive oxygen species-mediated DNA damage, epigenetic modifications and carcinogenicity, which can disturb the normal homeostasis of the body. The living being in a population is subjected to BPA exposure via air, water and food. Globally, urinary analysis reports have shown higher BPA concentrations in all age groups, with children being particularly susceptible due to its occurrence in items such as milk bottles. The conventional methods are costly with a low removal rate. Since there is no proper eco-friendly and cost-effective degradation of BPA reported so far. The phytoremediation, green-biotechnology based method which is a cost-effective and renewable resource can be used to sequestrate BPA. Phytoremediation is observed in numerous plant species with different mechanisms to remove harmful contaminants. Plants normally undergo several improvements in genetic and molecular levels to withstand stress and lower levels of toxicants. But such natural adaptation requires more time and also higher concentration of contaminants may disrupt the normal growth, survival and yield of the plants. Therefore, natural or synthetic amendments and genetic modifications can improve the xenobiotics removal rate by the plants. Also, constructed wetlands technique utilizes the plant's phytoremediation mechanisms to remove industrial effluents and medical residues. In this review, we have discussed the limitations and futuristic advancement strategies for degrading BPA using phytoremediation-associated mechanisms.

Performance analysis of a robust design optimization of a solenoid with different sensitivity metrics

Optimization is an essential part of designing electrical machines and devices. Considering the uncertainties and tolerances from the beginning of the design process can lead to a more robust design and significantly reduce the number of waste products during the manufacturing process. However, the computational demand for these robust design optimization problems is amazingly high. This paper examines how the computational demand and the robustness of the results depend on the applied sensitivity metric. The multi-objective TEAM 35 benchmark problem has been used as the basis of the comparison. This optimization task aims to create a homogeneous magnetic field in a predefined coil region, which is insensitive to the positioning errors of the coil turns. The original definition of the problem uses a simple worst-case sensitivity metric calculated from the extreme values of the optimized turn parameters in the given tolerance range. This sensitivity metric has been replaced by Plackett–Burman, Box–Behnken, and Central Composite Design-based metrics. It was shown in this simple geometry that there is a significant difference between the resulting sensitivities. Nevertheless, Plackett–Burman and Central Composite Design provided the more accurate and consistent estimate of the sensitivity of the examined layouts, with a higher but still reasonable computation demand than the worst-case metric.

The effect of mint addition on the physicochemical and organoleptic properties of strawberry sorbets

The study aimed to produce, analyse, and evaluate the consumer acceptance of a functional peppermint-, and spearmint-enriched (0.5,1,2 %) sorbet, which contains only natural substances in its composition, to meet today's popular health-conscious consumer trends. Regarding acid composition, the sorbets contained malic acid, succinic acid, and citric acid. Sorbets regarded of water-soluble sugars, contained sucrose in the lowest concentration, followed by glucose, and the amount of fructose, which is typical for fruits, was the highest. The sorbets' TPC and TAC contents were determined to be between 510.72 and 743.77 mg GAE/kg, and 906.64 and 1137.67 mg AAE/kg respectively. The average melting rate of the desserts was 0.16–0.22 g/min, and based on consumer acceptance, the control and the samples added with 0.5 % spearmint and peppermint mint were the most favorable. The sorbets containing 1 % and 2 % mint had too intense menthol flavor, thus the enjoyment value of the products was reduced based on consumer feedback.

Multiple-solution heat exchanger network synthesis using P-HENS solver

Analysis on the alternative designs on top of the optimal network has proven valuable and meaningful for the decision-makers in determining the most suitable options which fulfill a wide range of objective functions. On the basis of an extension of the P-graph framework, a procedure was developed previously for multiple-solution heat exchanger network (HEN) synthesis. This procedure is capable of generating the n-best HENs depending on predefined structural constraints, for example, the maximum number of heat exchangers used for the entire system, the maximum number of sequential heat exchangers on each stream, the maximum number of stream splittings per stream. Since the choice of a parameter influences the effect of other parameters on the result, it is difficult to find the proper set of parameters for the solver that result in all plausible solutions to the original problem. Naturally, this issue emerges in any HEN synthesis problem, its systematic treatment is essential. The purpose of the current work was to develop a heuristic framework for determining the most reasonable parameters of the HEN generation algorithm and guiding the designer through the optimization process. The outcome of this study not only benefits the researchers and industrial practitioners of this field but may also be extended for educational purposes.

Exploring Internal Factors Of Capacity Expansion Decision-Making In Hungarian Family Businesses In Food Industry: Introducing A Novel Model

The purpose of the research on which this paper is based was to test and validate the decision-making model previously set up by the authors. The model presents the internal factors influencing the decisions of family businesses regarding capacity expansion and the possible decision outcomes. The distinctiveness of the model is that it presents the internal factors affecting decisions related to capacity expansion, thereby helping family businesses to make decisions. For collecting data, both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used. As qualitative data collection techniques, in-depth interviews and focus group interviews were conducted. As quantitative method, an online questionnaire was used, whose questions were compiled based on previous research of the authors. The questions indirectly assess the internal factors influencing capacity expansion decisions of family businesses and the possible outcome of the decisions. The questionnaire was sent to the VOSZ (National Association of Entrepreneurs), MAPI (Hungarians on the Market Club) and the Association of Family Entrepreneurs, which means approximately 500 addresses. After data cleaning, 135 completed questionnaire were analyzed with SPSS software. In-depth interview was conducted with the heads of five family businesses, whose results were analyzed using tagging and artificial intelligence. The model previously set up by the authors was validated by both qualitative and quantitative research. It can be concluded that the following three internal factors influence the decision of family businesses regarding capacity expansion: socio-emotional wealth, cooperation between generations, and heterogeneous top management team. The family businesses themselves are not necessarily aware of this, so the model enriches the scientific literature and helps in the conscious operation of family businesses.

Mapping IT and Management Challenges in Small and Micro-Businesses: A Path to Digital Maturity in Manufacturing †

Small and micro-businesses often struggle with poor data accuracy due to a lack of dedicated labor force for non-core business functions. The required efforts and costs associated with improving data accuracy, such as setting up and operating an adequate inventory management system, are unpredictable for these businesses. Despite the data-intensive nature of operating specialized software like MES and WMS, the decision to invest in excessive data manipulation can be challenging for micro-entities, even with the potential benefits. This study aims to empirically determine the challenges, risks, and other non-financial decision factors micro-enterprises face when establishing effective data management and utilization practices. A data model was developed based on interviews with 17 small business manufacturers and service companies to support the essential data entry requirements of micro-businesses. The findings support the concept of a SAAS (Software as a Service) product tailored to the needs of these businesses. Furthermore, this research highlights the under-researched areas of logistics processes and data management in small businesses.

With the continuous development of smart cities, the relationship between digital media and city branding has attracted significant attention. This study uses the CiteSpace tool to provide a comprehensive visual analysis of the research landscape in the field of digital media and city branding from 2013 to 2023. A systematic literature review (n=689 articles) was used to explore the main trends. The methodology included the analysis of publication volume, international collaboration network, research field (including keyword co-occurrence and keyword clustering), and research hotspots and frontiers analysis. The study underlines the importance of digital marketing and market communication research in the context of city branding. The study highlights the complex dynamics of this relationship and the importance of exploring the interactive influences within these interdisciplinary fields. Finally, the data analysis highlights several potential research questions related to the development of creative accounting, offering valuable insights for future studies. Additionally, this study provides a framework for firms to design and implement creative accounting development strategies. The study recommends that future research topics should include interdisciplinary approaches, consumer engagement, global collaboration, and long-term branding strategies. These approaches are necessary to advance understanding and effective management of city brands in the digital age.

Minkowski's inequality based sensitivity analysis of fuzzy signatures

Fuzzy signatures were introduced as special tools to describe and handle complex systems without their detailed mathematical models. The input parameters of these systems naturally have uncertainties, due to human activities or lack of precise data. These uncertainties influence the final conclusion or decision about the system. In this paper we discuss the sensitivity of the weigthed general mean aggregation operator to the uncertainty of the input values, then we analyse the sensitivity of fuzzy signatures equipped with these aggregation operators. Finally, we apply our results to a fuzzy signature used in civil enginnering.
